Summary
On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing. In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness....
Detective Inspector Luc Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine’s missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine’s killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care. It’s not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes....
The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined. Fans of Angela Marson, Mark Billingham and M. J. Aldridge will be gripped by this chilling journey into the mind of a troubled killer.

What a difference the choice of narrator can make.
I bought this when it was first released and made a couple of attempts at listening to it, but the original narrator had the most horrendous French accent (reminiscent of 'Aloe 'Aloe') and it was torchure to my wee ears.
I was obviously drawn to it many times and had even bought it again with a new narrator, but I hadn't realised it until recently. When I noticed, I checked out Robin Laing version and I am now writing this 1 week and 6 books in.
Yup I love the series. Gritty story lines, relatable characters and each story builds seamlessly into the next. I feel like I know the characters, some I love, some irritate me and others that make me lol at their Scottish banter. A Scottish girl myself, I really get it.
I'm mearing the end of the series and I am excited and dreading it in equal measures. I want to know what happens to the main characters, will they won't they?? I shall say no more.
Well written and a massive improvement in narration. It always astounds me when you just know a good book is being slaughtered by the person reading it. With the best will in the world you just can't get past it and an author loses out on reaching so many listeners as a result.
Note to authors. You put your blood sweat and tears into the process of writing, producing and promoting your work, dont let it down at the point of selecting a narrator. It really can put us listeners off for good xx

Good series start
A few dodgy accents but overall good narration and an interesting plot. Callanach is complex enough to merit further listening.

Took a while to get into
It was good, but it did take a while to get into and a couple of the accents were slightly inconsistent. However, it was a gripping story. I found some of the torture descriptions a bit too graphic.

Brilliantly written a a joy to listen a detective novel that’s not ‘soft centred’ fab!

Amazing! Worth 6 stars!
I loved this book, it was one of my favourite audio books and I've listened to a lot! The characters were interesting and the narrator was excellent! I'm going to buy the whole series to see how Luc Callanach settles into his job and how his relationship with Ava progresses. Highly recommended!

Thoroughly enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this book and my enjoyment owed as much to the excellent narration of Robin Laing as it did to.the storyline. He really brought the characters to life. Now about to start the next book which is already in my library.

Excellent from start to finish..
Great story, excellent narrator.
It’s take a while to find a book I didn’t want to return within the first 30 mins. You won’t be disappointed with this listen
