Summary

He had never heard himself scream before. It was terrifying.

Alone, trapped in the darkness and with no way out, Bart Campbell knows that his chances of being found alive are slim.

Drugged and kidnapped from his Edinburgh home, the realisation soon dawns that he’s been locked inside a shipping container - but what Bart doesn’t know is that he’s now heading for France, where his unspeakable fate is already sealed....

DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are working on separate cases that soon collide as it becomes clear that the men and women being shipped to France are being traded for women trafficked into Scotland.

With so many lives at stake, it seems an impossible task - but there’s no option of failure when Bart and so many others will soon be dead....

The next gripping thriller from the best-selling crime author Helen Fields.

The perfect read for fans of M. J. Arlidge and Karin Slaughter.

Critic reviews

"Perfect Kill is a compelling breathless read. Unflinching, brave and so well researched and considered." (Essie Fox)

"Utterly compelling, as ever, and dizzyingly twisted, with characters so real they could step off the page." (BP Walter)

Brilliant!

Helen Fields gets better with every book in this series! I waited eagerly for this one to be published and bought it on the day of its release. Now I’m counting down the months to the next one in the series! Fingers crossed there will be one?
This is not a genre I have ever read before and I’m not sure how I ‘fell’ into the first reading. I was lucky then because there were others in the series already published. Now, all I can do is wait....

WOW WOW WOW

What a book. Every human emotion was covered - cruelty and abuse, altruism and empathy. It was a long listen but just not long enough. A special mention must be made of the narrator who is truly excellent. He never misses a beat or mix up the accents. He adds so much to the experience. Well done him and well done Helen Fields. Can’t wait for the next in the series.

Perhaps one step to disturbing for me

I awaited the release of this book, but I found the content to disturbing. Her murders are always “ inventive” but if such races do take place , they have no place in a book, which in the end is a form of entertainment, for me anyway. I love the characters Luc and Ava and the “will they won’t they” thread that runs through the series, I did finish it, but wouldn’t “recommend it”

Excessive violence & story that doesn't make sense

Two stories are told in parallel based on the theme of criminal trafficking: one the more common one of women tricked into prostitution by offers of a better life in another country and the other illegal organ provision. The trafficking of women is a much visited theme in recent fiction and here is exploited to describe violence and degradation that is taken to such extremes that made me feel a very uncomfortable listening to what was done. It may happen but it panders to those to get off on this kind of sick pornography. The other theme, organ trafficking, starts as a more interesting story but to my surprise the explanation as to why people are kidnapped to harvest their organs simply does not make sense in the end as killing people wasn't necessary for the medical scam. It would be spoiler to say why but if you can stomach the content of this book you'll know by the end.
There's quite a bit of speechifying about relationships and dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer. If you have the bad luck to listen to this having had a diagnosis of Grade 2 breast cancer ignore the erroneous statement by one of the character that the chance of survival is 50:50. That's wrong, with modern treatment it is 90% for 5 years and 85% for 10 years.
As with previous book the narrator is excellent it;s such a pity he had to read some horrible text.

Addictive!

Performance excellent as ever! I found parts of the beginning very distressing and had to skip forward but thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless!
Is it just me, or maybe it’s the subject matter, but the descriptions of the rapes/murders seemed more brutal and graphic?

5 1/2 *

This series is so enjoyable. The characters are so well developed, sometimes a little clichéd but that’s okay. Although I do find ongoing “will they, won’t they?” relationship themes in long running series a little tiresome, but in this series it makes sense and doesn’t detract from the actual story. The crimes are interesting.

The narrator is very talented with neither the narration nor the book usurping the other.

I hope there will be at least one more book but I think after that the relationships both personal and in the work place may have run their course for me at least.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

Perfect read

Cannot get enough of this series. Already wanting the next one. Speech of some individual French male characters was difficult to differentiate sometimes but overall Robin Laing rose brilliantly to the challenge of a large cast of characters - creating a discernibly different and memorable voices. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
