Agatha Christie’s classic thriller. Features the recurring character Colonel Race from Death on the Nile, Cards on the Table and The Man in the Brown Suit. Six people sit down to dinner at a table laid for seven. In front of the empty place is a sprig of rosemary – in solemn memory of Rosemary Barton who died at the same table exactly one year previously. No one present on that fateful night would ever forget the woman’s face, contorted beyond recognition – or what they remembered about her astonishing life.

Story
Gipsy's Acre was a truly beautiful upland site with views out to sea, and in Michael Rogers it stirred a child-like fantasy. There, amongst the dark fir trees, he planned to build a house, find a girl, and live happily ever after. But as he left the village, a shadow of menace hung over the land, for this was the place where accidents happened. Perhaps Michael should have heeded the locals' warnings: "There's no luck for them as meddles with Gipsy's Acre."

Story
All great crime writers have their favourite creations. Similarly, every great sleuth has his, or her, own preferred method of deduction. Take the charming Parker Pyne, who relies upon an intuitive knowledge of human nature to solve the 'Problem at Pollensa Bay'. Or Mr Satterthwaite, who seeks inspiration through his collaboration with the enigmatic Mr Quin in 'The Harlequin Tea Set' mystery. Then, of course, there's Poirot, whose measured analysis of motive and opportunity is tested to the full in 'Yellow Iris', when he receives an anonymous call about a matter of life and death.

Story
Like many of her contemporaries, Agatha Christie wrote stories for a variety of magazines in the 1920s and '30s, and most of these eventually found their way into her books of short stories. Now, many years after her death, detective work worthy of Agatha Christie herself has unearthed "new" stories, most of which have never been published anywhere in the world since their original appearances.

Classic Agatha Christie mystery
When a young woman recounts a series of apparent mishaps, Hercule Poirot, holidaying in Cornwall, is intrigued. Along with his friend Hastings, he sets out to investigate what he believes to be a threat to the woman’s life. But how do you solve a murder that hasn’t been committed?
I read a great many Agatha Christie novels in my teenage years, but the plots of most of them have vanished from my memory, so it may be that I’ve read this one before. First published in 1932, this is the sixth of the Poirot books and features Captain Hastings and Chief Inspector Japp, who add to the fun.
My memories of Christie’s writing are tarred with the idea that I stopped reading her books due to boredom (with plots, characters etc), so I wasn’t expecting too much with this one. As it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised. The writing is generally clever and witty (especially Poirot’s dialogue) and, though I did get a bit confused towards the end, it was an entertaining story that kept me guessing.
The audiobook is read by the lovely Hugh Fraser, who brings out the humour of Christie’s writing (and also played Hastings in 43 episodes the Poirot TV series).

Murder in St Loo…
Hercule Poirot is making one of his periodic attempts at retirement, and has gone for a little break in St. Loo with his old friend Captain Hastings, home from the Argentine. But wherever that pesky man goes, murder is sure to follow! As he sits on the hotel terrace with Hastings, something whizzes past his head – not a pebble, as he first thinks, but a bullet, apparently having just missed its target, a young woman called Nick Buckley who lives in the End House of the title. Once Poirot has introduced himself to Nick, he discovers this is the latest in a series of what appear to be attempts on her life, and he takes on the task of finding the would-be murderer before he or she succeeds…
This has always been one of my favourite Poirots, which never seems to get quite the love I feel it deserves. I love the solution – one of Christie’s cleverest, I think – and the way that you can see in retrospect that she gave you all the clues and even drew attention to some of them along the way, and yet still left you – well, me, anyway – completely baffled right up to the reveal.
Nick seems to be a popular young woman, without an enemy in the world, and with no worldly wealth to provide a motive. But the attacks on her suggest that it must be someone close to her who is trying to kill her, so her little group of friends and neighbours come under suspicion. Poirot will have to find which of them has a reason to want her dead. But when someone else is killed in mistake for Nick, he feels guilty for having been unable to prevent that murder, and still fears Nick will be the next victim.
Although the story is quite serious and Nick’s friends are a motley and mostly unlikeable crew, there’s a lot of humour in this one in the banter between Poirot and Hastings. Poor old Hastings – Poirot really is extremely rude about his intellectual abilities! Nonetheless it’s often Hastings’ simplistic way of looking at things that puts Poirot on the right track. Sometimes Hastings bites back, but Poirot always gets the last word…
“Do you suppose I’d have made a success of my ranch out in the Argentine if I were the kind of credulous fool you make out?”
“Do not enrage yourself, mon ami. You have made a great success of it—you and your wife.”
“Bella,” I said, “always goes by my judgement.”
“She is as wise as she is charming,” said Poirot.
I listened to it again this time with the wonderful Hugh Fraser narrating – these Agatha Christie audiobooks have become a major source of relaxation to me during the difficult lockdown months, always entertaining even when I know the stories so well. Fortunately I still have many more to go…

Another Christie Classic!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Highly recommended! Another Agatha Christie classic with so many twists and turns that even Poirot's baffled! The David Suchet TV adaptation of this book follows the Christie book closely, unlike some others, so if you are a fan of the TV programmes you will love this audiobook! An must for every Christie fan!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hastings as always is my favourite character. The perfect sidekick to Poirot. Made even better when the audiobook is read by Hugh Fraser!
Have you listened to any of Hugh Fraser’s other performances? How does this one compare?
As always a great performance by Hugh Fraser, he seems to understand Agatha Christie and particularly Poirot so well. This is definitely up there with his best, although "The Big Four" is my personal favourite.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I tend not to listen to any audiobook in one session, so no it wasn't.

Very enjoyable listen, Narrator excellent,
Where does Peril at End House rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
As a recent member I was impressed by the quality and versatility of the Narration. The story was a typical Agatha Christie, and I still couldn't guess "who did it"
What other book might you compare Peril at End House to and why?
I have not listened to many stories yet, other than Sherlock Holmes, and they both have been good so it is difficult to compare them.
Which scene was your favorite?
I was caught into all of the scenes, but I think the a scene in the last chapter caught my imagination the most.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
not really, as Murder Mysteries, don't tend to be that way inclined
Any additional comments?
Just a very good way to occupy ones time when one is busy with hand work, most enjoyable, the work just gets done.!!!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
