Summary

Summer 1911. A scorching heatwave engulfs the quiet town of Littleton Cotterell and brings about an unusually early harvest. The villagers are thrilled, but events quickly turn sour when one of them turns up dead in an apple orchard, stabbed through the heart.

Amateur sleuth Lady Hardcastle and her trusty lady’s maid, Flo, suddenly have a juicy case on their hands. Might the mysterious stranger they recently met in the village be to blame?

When a second cider-related murder takes place, it quickly becomes clear that there’s more to these mysterious deaths than meets the eye. The daring duo uncover whispers of an ancient order and moonlit rituals. And evidence points to a macabre secret in the village stretching back years. A secret someone will do anything—anything at all—to keep hidden.

Something is rotten, that’s for sure. With the local constabulary baffled, Lady Hardcastle and Flo must use all their powers of wit and whimsy to get to the bottom of the dastardly deed. But can they catch the killer before any more people drop dead?

Splendid, marvellous, delightful

Loved it! The narration is fabulous and you really get a feel for the characters and their playful relationship. Only small criticism is some of the Welsh pronounsiations but that is a very minor thing and actually causes a smile if anything. I will never get tired of this delightful series. Emily and Flo's humurous adventures are absolutely brilliant.

Great for Agatha Raisin fans

The best so far

This is such an enjoyable series. It is wonderful to have a quintessentially British pair of crime fighters. There is a wonderfully slow development of each character. This is my favourite story so far, although I've said that about each of these books. Elizabeth Knowleden really brings out the best of the characters too.

As good as usual, with 1 Flaw…

…sadly I can’t say what the flaw is, as it’s a spoiler!

However, Lady H and Flo are as delightful as ever! I’m really pleased that the police are working with them, rather than batting them to one side, I’m equally pleased that they are working with the police and not surreptitiously, successfully behind their backs!

A complicated tale and a not so Cozy Mystery.

Not my favorite installment of the series

I still found the book diverting. However, there was very little substance. A lot of dialogue, a lot of running around, but a thin plot and not much witty banter. There was just something missing. Most of the character development has stagnated. In fact, Sunderland and the other characters seem almost superfluous. There's none of the spirit that they displayed in earlier stories. This series is well written and outstandingly narrated, so I'll probably stick with it if there's another book after this. But I won't be disappointed if this is the last in the series. I think it has run its course.

Another very enjoyable book in the series.

This was a fun return to the Lady Hardcastle universe. I’m glad the author came back to writing about them. TE Kinsey’s writing and Elizabeth Knoweldon’s narration are an outstanding combination.

Fun Who Done It

Another engaging mystery with Lady Hardcastle & Flo. A great read, humorous and full of heart, I never tire of falling back to the early 1900's with these quirky characters. As always, the narration from Elizabeth Knowelden was excellent.
