Summary
A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror.

Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk. Of course there are tales of strange happenings - but not more than in any other town its size.
Ben Mears, a moderately successful writer, returns to the Lot to write a novel based on his early years, and to exorcise the terrors that have haunted him since childhood. The event he witnessed in the house now rented by a new resident. A newcomer with a strange allure. A man who causes Ben some unease as things start to happen: a child disappears, a dog is brutally killed - nothing unusual, except the list starts to grow.
Soon surprise will turn to bewilderment, bewilderment to confusion and finally to terror....

A captivating listen
I'm a big fan of Stephen King's stories, in particular the exposition and level of detail he puts into his world building. I got sucked into the story and often listened for longer than i intended to! Overall the plot was interesting and often chilling and the narration was spot on.

Peyton Place — with vampires
Well, sort of. In fact, this is King’s masterpiece, or has a strong claim to it, though for my money IT just has the edge. This one works so brilliantly because of its evocation of small-town American life: the curtain-twitchers, the family conflicts … these ingredients are present in many other King titles - indeed, probably most other. Here, the juxtaposition with the horrors visited on the town of ‘Salem’s Lot is so stark that it packs a more powerful punch - and somehow, despite the extreme subject matter, the listener buys into it; it all seems weirdly plausible, at times. There are some fantastic set-pieces. I loved the almost poetic descriptions of the town throughout the book, a place whose life force has ebbed away. The plot has a tremendous momentum and the portentous narration is spot-on. There’s also a great foreword - read by King himself. Sink your teeth into this magnificent audiobook now!

I remember watching this as a kid and absolutely loving it I've enjoyed the book as well although there is quite a bit of difference

Entertaining
As per Stephen King's prologue, I think this book would fall under the category "good trash". It is entertaining and better written than many books of a similar genre. My biggest criticism is that it can be a bit painfully obvious at times that it is written by a randy straight guy. The sole description of two of the women in the book is that they had "giant jaloobies" or "huge jaloobies" (not paraphrased...), the sheer quantity of references to breasts that he manages to shoehorn in is really quite something, and in general he provides overly extended descriptions of female anatomy whilst completely skimming over describing their male counter parts.

Truly Gripping
i loved it from start to beginning. I found myself yearning for it not to end. You grow attached to the characters without realising it and as usual, Stephen King's detailed style in which he describes these individuals and locations helps you picture it all perfectly. I'll definitely be revisiting this classic in the future.

An amazing old friend
Been years since I read this book and I really enjoyed this audiobook. This is shorter than some of the other Stephen King Audiobooks at 18 hours but it zips along at a great pace and I didn't feel like anything extra was needed by way of narrative. It's such a classic story (basically, what would happen if Dracula turned up in Maine) and brilliantly narrated by Ron McLarty.
A real treat was the 20+ minute introduction by Stephen King explaining how he came to write the story (it was his second Novel after Carrie) etc.
This comes highly recommended. You might want to keep the light on and avoid responding to scratching at your windows though!

Still gets me
I have read this book many many times over the years, I would love to give you inspiring words that would encourage your decision to purchase, I'll keep it simple, at 46 it still stopped me getting out of bed at 2 in the morning for a wee..... You know.... Just in case 😂
