Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based - and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.

Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology - and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-listen for parents - and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.

Scattered Minds:

- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay

- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy - and why

- Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience

- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours

- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood

- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

Definitely worth reading if you have ADHD

The most useful information for me was learning that a big reason why I am distracted is because my emotional needs aren’t being met.

lifesaver

What a book. As an ADHD adult, this book talked to me.
Every example, every story, every solution... it was like talking to an oracle who helps me understand my brain. I will be relistening again for sure.

by ADD, for ADD

A compassionate and understanding source of information regarding ADD (aka ADHD), by an individual who has personal experience of dealing with ADD.

Few others have made the connection between Genetics and Environment regarding this condition and I believe in time Gabor Matè will be celebrated for his pioneering work in this field.

Outstanding wisdom, insight, and delivery.

I really liked this audiobook, Gabor Maté is one of our time's most insightful, wise and knowledgeable authors. I've read and listened to many of his books and I have always found them packed with really useful information. To my mind, his books are essential reading in the fields they cover.
Whilst I've never been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD myself, most of the content of this book could've been written about me. My eldest daughter was recently diagnosed with ADD and my youngest with autism.
I've somehow independently arrived at, and taken the path outlined in this book to overcome ADD without the benefit of the shortcut this book would've represented. I can, therefore, independently verify that this path is indeed correct; spiritual and emotional growth, supported with the necessary counselling, is the necessary path. I can attest that life is immeasurably better for having taken this path.
Please listen to and share this title with anyone who suffers with the difficulties that ADD/ADHD present. Not only to the individual, but parents, friends and siblings that are impacted. You will be doing them a great service.

Parts of this book felt like it was written about me.

My brother suggested this book to me, I've not bothered looking into psychology and human behaviours too much as it's not my interest. Chapter 25 felt like it was directed to me, it put in words that which I could not explain myself. I even shed a tears when listening to this.

Brilliant, informative and useful for anyone with ADHD.

Best book I've read (or had read to me) so far on the topic. Easy to listen to and never dry or boring.

Thought-provoking and compassionate

I'm an adult with adhd and found this book incredibly validating and encouraging. Beautifully written and narrated. I'll be listening to it a second time, as well as encouraging friends and family to read it.

Just brilliant!

I have never before heard someone describe what it is like to be in my brain, to live my daily struggles which seem so effortless to others. Truly brilliant, an excellent read/listen. I would, as always, love Gabor to narrate his own words as I find his voice so soothing, but ironically, it is most likely his ADD which makes this not possible. Daniel always does a great job in his father’s absence.
