Much anticipated and well delivered
Missed this coming out. Great storyline. Stockwin get the introductory particular dismissed quickly and there follows a swashbuckling story in the usual naval ‘Flasman’ vein. Already waiting for the next instalment!

Disappointed
This was by far the worst of the series I hope he returns to form for the penultimate book. It would be a real shame to have followed so avidly and be disappointed at the end

Outstanding
Another brilliant historic nautical novel following the progress of Sir Thomas Kidd. Mr Stockwin has excelled himself yet again

A collection of short stories
I've listened to the whole series and loved them but this book was dreadful. There was no real thread to the book, which is essentially a collection of short stories that don't relate.
I hope the next book returns to the Tom Kydd of old.

Disappointing Plot
Having followed Kydd through every novel so far I have never failed to be entertained. This novel not so much. The author displays his usual knowledge of the wooden world and life at sea, however the plot lets the novel down. Too many weak fragments all thrown together, a string of unlikely events. Still a firm fan I will hope for an improvement next time.

Not salty enough
Julian Stockwin stands alongside Forrester and O’Brien for his nautical yarns and I’ve followed the Kydd series through every novel. For the second book running the supposedly wily Sir Thomas is duped by improbable double agents and this time attacks a friendly fort at the behest of a scruffy old man without credentials. Then, once again, Renzi contrives to appear like a Jack in the box to give a new angle to the story.
I will remain faithful to the author and excellent narrator but hope that Kydd can find a new ocean to conquer without the remarkably fortuitous availability
of Stirk, Pinto etc each time he puts to sea. Some new blood in the crew and on the deck will revitalise the series. I am in awe of a great author and I called ncede that my views may well be ill founded but that was the feeling I had a the end of the book.

A bit of a strange mix
Reads more like three mini-stories loosely strung together that in previous books would have each been a tale in itself.
Although enjoyable this made it all feel a bit too rushed and superficial compared to previous books in the series.

Disappointing yet again…
The plot over the last couple of books has not been at its best, I’ve been an avid follower of Tom Kydd and Nicholas Renzi, but it’s starting to feel like a chore to get through the story, I appreciate they’re getting through the years (war), but where’s the excitement?! Even Persephone & Cecelia seem to have lost their character!
Following along in the hope that our dynamic duo can find their way again!

Where is the Thomas Kydd I loved to read about
I have to say that I have been dissapointed with the last two books in this series, In both books it seems the author is determined that Kydd should not be involved in the war with the US. In this latest book he allows US ships of war to escape him unscathed and doesn't fire upon US troops invading a Spanish Territory, yet later in the same book he has no compunction in firing upon Danish troops and gun boats, where is the consistency. Please get back to telling the story of a fictitious British naval hero. I have listened to the whole series and have until these last two books enjoyed them all.
