Summary
A gripping Scottish crime thriller from the winner of the Good Housekeeping Novel Writing competition 2016.
Two brutal killings rock Inverness and bring ex-Met Detective Inspector Lukas Mahler the biggest challenge of his career....
The body of the queen of daytime TV, Morven Murray, is discovered by her sister, Anna, on the morning of her wedding day. But does Anna know more about the murder than she's letting on?
Police informant Kevin Ramsay's murder looks like a gangland-style execution. But what could he have stumbled into that was dangerous enough to get him violently killed?
Mahler has only a couple of weeks to solve both cases while dealing with his mother's fragile mental health. But caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse, is ex-Met DI Lukas Mahler hunting one killer or two?

Outstanding
This is a spectacular debut novel, I enjoyed every minute of it, and of course, Steve Worsley brings all the characters to life in that spectacular way of his.
Poor DI Mahler has a lot to contend with, having just recently attended the funeral of a friend and colleague, his mother is having a rough time and now he's running two murder investigations, or it that one double murder investigation ... ? Buy it and find out for yourself.
If you like the Logan MacCrae series I think you will like this book, it too has it's moments of dark humour and the narration, as mentioned, is superb.

Loved it!
Originally I ordered this book because I rate Steve Worley’s narration. But I loved it. Great characters and exciting storyline. Would highly recommend if you like tartan noir.

Great story, but a poor recording.
I have the book as well as the audiobook, and a great story is let down by a poor recording which shows evidence of a significant lack of research into the correct pronuciation of place names, etc.
The story is excellent. Intriguing characters, and a terrific sense of place. Well written, and a fine new entry into the Tartan Noir genre.
The reader falls down in several areas. Despite being a Scot, his attempt at an Inverness accent is somewhat lacking, but it is his pronunciation of place names that causes the most issues. For example, Tomatin should be stressed on the second syllable, To-matin, not To-ma-tin. He can perhaps be forgiven for getting a US name, La Jolla, wrong, but a simple bit of research would have revealed that it is pronounced La Hoya.
A little more care would improve this audiobook considerably, so that it does justice to the writer’s efforts in telling a good story

Excellent start to a new series
This had everything going for it, narrated by one of my favourite narrators and set in and around Inverness and the Black Isle, some of my favourite places. Nothing disappointed, it was everything I could have hoped for. The main character is well drawn and interesting and there’s a quickly developing and intricate plot.
Looking forward to Book 2.
