Summary

One of the UK's brightest and best comedians takes an incisive look at race and belonging.

But where are you really from?

Phil Wang has been asked this question so many times he's lost count. So, finally, he decided to write a book about it. About how to be from two places at once.

Phil was born in the UK, in Stoke-on-Trent to an English mother and a Chinese-Malaysian father. Three weeks after his birth, the Wang family returned to his father's hometown in Malaysia, and at age 16, Phil was uprooted once again, to return with his family to the UK.

In Sidesplitter, Phil reflects on race, belonging and cultural cachet, bringing his trademark cynicism and wit to topics that range from food and comedy to empire and colonialism.

Hilarious throughout, a marvellous memoir

Absolutely loved this book. Phil is fast becoming my favourite comedian and had my undivided attention throughout with his perfect blend of humour and hard hitting truths.

Didn’t want it to end.

A really enjoyable and informative book by Phil Wang, who has a lovely voice. I’m sorry it had to end. I’ll miss you Phil!
PS I chose this book after listening to Phil on Adam Buxton’s podcast.

I feel so felt!

Thank you to Philly Philly Wang Wang for putting into words so much of my lived experience. I’m going to buy the book for my ‘mixed other’ siblings and discuss over a family meal with our love bird parents who sacrificed so much to be together… but gained a true love story to tell the grandkids.

Clever, funny, good.

Excellent, funny book. Also enabled me to bag a holiday to Malaysia, as my partner wants to try Phil’s tip for deciphering how shallow his affections are or aren’t … listen and all will become clear.

Extremely funny and thought provoking

I loved hearing the stories delivered as Phil Wang intended it, it really makes it all the more enjoyable and hilarious. It is fascinating to hear his experiences of being 'between two cultures' and being mixed race. I loved his frank discussion and insight into all things race. Highly recommend it - if you love his stand up you'll love this book!

Beautiflly written, beautifully narrated

I expected this book to be funny and it didn't disappoint. It is proper laugh-out loud funny at times. What really wowed me though was its emotional depth, and its common sense approach to potentially thorny topics such as race. Brilliant stuff.

too good not to have a subtitle that gives it some

Very thoughtful and evocative account about finding your place in society. Great insights into Malaysian and British culture, I had completely overlooked this title and only read it because it was recommended to me It's too good not to have a subtitle that gives it some weight.
