About this listen

The brilliantly quirky David Sedaris returns with a book of acerbic and outrageously funny stories about animals who have unmistakably human failings.

This collection of sharply observed animal-themed tales is a delight, told with David Sedaris’s trademark blend of hilarity and good nature. Though the characters may not be human, the situations in these stories bear an uncanny resemblance to the insanity of our own everyday interactions.

In ‘The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck’, three strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line. In ‘Hello Kitty’, a cynical feline struggles to sit through his prison-mandated AA meetings. In ‘The Squirrel and the Chipmunk’, a pair of star-crossed lovers is separated by prejudiced family members.

Includes an exclusive fable not featured in the book.

Chapters desperately need titles

Tried to convince my friends that David was a decent writer. Would have preferred to start with 'Rabbit' because its exactly our sense of humour but since no .ch titles & first story dips before the punchline, he (& I) got written off as a kook just after the start of squirrel seeks. Uurgh! It didn't have to be this way!!

Delightful and profound

This is only my second download from Audible, and it's a complete joy. The stories work on many different levels, much in the manner of the fables of La Fontaine or Aesop. Ostensibly they are about animals. Actually they are about us: our silly prejudices, pretensions and inconsistencies. The different readers are wonderful - each one perfect for the material. Not all the stories deserve 5 stars - but the baboon and the cat and the squirrel and the chipmunk stories are worth the price of this recording alone!

Great writing but be ready for very dark stories

Where does Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

6 out of 10 rating

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The idea of exploring human nature through animal interactions was brilliant in the hands of Sedaris' talent for dialogue and the creation of personalities through words. The only down side of this book is that each story is SO dark, in its underlying message about each aspect of human nature that Sedaris explores...it's a bit overwhelming at times.

Have you listened to any of David Sedaris’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have heard him perform live, but have not downloaded other books.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It's revealing when we explore the foibles of human nature through antrhopomorphised animals

Any additional comments?

The readings by Sedaris and the other actors was superb. It brought out the quality of the writing.

Just plain....TERRIFIC!

This is a wonderful book, a real treat. Very funny, so well observed and very dark in places. You need to hear the story about the Great Horned Owl - it's fantastic, as is the whole book. I loved it!

Squirrel seeks his credit back

What would have made Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk better?

I have other audio books by David Sedaris. The others were pleasing and sometimes laugh out loud. This however was not. The use of other voice actors, lost a lot of the inflection and emphasis on words found in the other readings. It didn't seem to be witty or observed humor at all. In fact rather depressing.I found myself waiting for the next animal to be killed or die in some horrible way. When I was listening that is.

What could David Sedaris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I have heard the author read some of these stories before and they were a little more palatable.

Would you be willing to try another one of David Sedaris’s performances?

Yes. His observations have been entertaining in the past.

Any additional comments?

I think that Audible offering the opportunity to get a credit back if you buy a dud, is amazing.

Just plain AWFUL

I have downloaded most of David Sedaris audio books and the rest I have on CD. They have all been most enjoyable. This is not one such audio book. What a awful collection of stories clearly just stolen from real life with people replaced with animals. Too much swearing for no effect. This download comes in two parts. I did not even bother to listen to the second part. This review is for the Squirrel Seeks Chipmunck, and not Audible as a service. Audible is still second to none as far as content and service are concernd.

appalling

What would have made Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk better?

I am a fan of David but this is a terrible set of stories which are not interesting or funny in any form. The reader does not introduce any expression or life into them. What a waste of a credit Really really disappointed with this purchase.

Would you ever listen to anything by David Sedaris again?

Yes

How could the performance have been better?

Different narrator might help.
