The USS Discovery’s specialty is using its spore-based hub drive to jump great distances faster than any warp-faring vessel in Starfleet. To do this, Lieutenant Paul Stamets navigates the ship through the recently revealed mycelial network, a subspace domain Discovery can briefly transit but in which it cannot remain. After responding to a startling distress call originating from within the network, the Discovery crew find themselves trapped in an inescapable realm where they will surely perish unless their missing mycelial fuel is found or restored.

Summary
An all-new novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!
In a desperate attempt to prevent the artificial intelligence known as Control from seizing crucial information that could destroy all sentient life, Commander Michael Burnham donned the “Red Angel” time-travel suit and guided the USS Discovery into the future and out of harm’s way. But something has gone terribly wrong, and Burnham has somehow arrived in a place far different from anything she could have imagined - more than 900 years out of her time, with Discovery nowhere to be found, and where the mysterious and cataclysmic event known as “the Burn” has utterly decimated Starfleet and, with it, the United Federation of Planets. How then can she possibly exist day-to-day in this strange place? What worlds are out there waiting to be discovered? Do any remnants of Starfleet and the Federation possibly endure? With more questions than answers, Burnham must nevertheless forge new friendships and new alliances if she hopes to survive this future long enough for the Discovery crew to find her....

Great story writing a bit flowery
I really enjoyed the story but for me it read a bit like a woman’s magazine story “rather flowery”.
Burnham was a lot tougher in earlier books, her attitude and decision making was much more Vulcan than this version .

A perfect way to fill in the dots
The adventures of Michael, Book, Grudge and a number of new and old friends during the year which she spent in the (new) future without the Discovery & her crewmates. A perfect way to fill in the dots and to flesh out relationships and events barely mentioned in the tv show (pity that Season 4 of the show will not be available outside the US & Canada until 2022, if ever). The narrator was perfect in the many different roles she played.

Amazing Companion
An incredible companion to Discovery season 3, chronicling Burnham's "Gap Year" searching for info about the Burn.
McCormack expertly captures the banter and relationship between Burnham and Book (and Grudge!), while expanding on numerous elements mentioned or touched upon briefly in the series itself.
January LaVoy's voiceover work is top notch, I don't know how she does it, but with simple infections or tones, it's practically Burnham's voice!
I didn't want the story to end and could have listened to many more hours of this wonderful book.

Made a grown man cry
Having loved the show I decided I needed to try something different for the collection and I stumbled upon this ... January LaVoy... my God you’re perfect! You sound exactly like Michael and Book... the way you connected to the character of Sahil gave him such depth without having to drag on. The emotion in the story telling actually made me shout “YEAHHHHHH BOOK LETS F’ing GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!” Snd much much more throughout my read. The narration and detail allowed me to leave reality almost, like I was apart of a movie.. each new obstacle that arises never takes away from the prime directive .. FIND DISCOVERY and find my friends. Oh man I could go on and on ... by the end I was letting tears fall as I coasted my garbage truck down the highway lol I need more! January LaVoy, you did awesome!!! Una McCormack, you’re a legendary no other way to describe the detail that came out of this piece!!

Love Star Trek - blown away by the narrator!
The book did a great job of filling in the gaps of Michael’s journey between the end of season two and the beginning of season three. January LaVoy is my new favorite narrator. To call what she does mimicry is an understatement. She embodies every aspect of the character and has mastered their dialect as well as speech patterns. She’s brilliant and I hope they continue to use her for the rest of the series.

Great Anti-Capitalist Star Trek
Una McCormack is one of the best authors out there writing licenced sci fi. She is one of 5he best currently working sci fi authors full-stop. She has a gift for capturing a character's voice in a way that feels natural, and she crafts such interesting, character-driven narratives that are head and shoulders above anything else 8n the Star Trek novel line.
This book is an amazing examination of what the Federation is and what it means for such an idealist as Michael Burnham. This is also probably the most overtly anti-capitalist Star Trek books so far in how much Dr. McCormack emphasises the advantages of the Federation's moneyless socialist society over the laissez-faire capitalist, individualist society present in the 32nd century. Yet she also explores legitimate criticisms of the Federation and broader themes of empires becoming too spread out and getting so mired in bureaucracy that they lose touch with the needs of the many.
A fantastic book for any Star Trek fan, especially those interested in Star Trek politics and economics.

Fantastic entry
This story did a wonderful job of fleshing out Michael's missing year that takes palce between episodes 3.1 and 3.3. Una McCormack does a fantastic job of crafting a story to fit in the missing pieces that really help Michael and Book's season 3 relationship feel even richer, gives us a lot more detail on the post-Burn world, and even includes more Sahil (who I LOVE). It's a very delicate balancing act to write an engaging story that doesn't create plot holes with the alpha canon from the TV series, but McCormack does it and she does it VERY well. Additionally, narrator January LaVoy is beyond amazing. Her command of accent, dialect, volume, and tone are top notch, and her narration style is enthralling. Seeing her name on an audiobook let's me know I'm in for a good time!

Loved It!
Great addition to the Star Trek universe! The author does a fantastic job of getting inside Michael’s thoughts and emotions, taking you through her development over the year of her time in the future without the rest of the Discovery crew. There was also some great exploration of life and people of this further future society.
My only nitpick is that the action scenes were written in an almost glossed over way, especially compared to the rich way everything else in the book is described and given time to be experienced.

Fantastic Listen
Story perfectly fleshed out the back story that was rushed or glanced over during the show. We were given a detailed front seat to what Michael was doing while hoping to find Discovery. The bond forged with Book and others as well as some interesting character twists. The narrator was excellent. She sounded just like 'Michael Burnham' and did a very convincing job with Book and characters with different accents. I am definitely glad a gave this a listen. 🖖🏽
