Summary

Jazz Thornton first attempted to take her own life at the age of 12. Multiple attempts followed and she spent time in psychiatric wards and under medical supervision as she rode the roller coaster of depression and anxiety through her teenage years - yet the attempts continued.

Find out what Jazz learned about how her negative thought patterns came to be and how she turned those thoughts - and her life - around. Who and what helped and what didn't help. The insights she gives will help create greater understanding of those grappling with mental illness and provide support for those around them who desperately want to help.

Jazz went on to attend film school and to co-found Voices of Hope, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping those with mental health issues and show them there is a way forward. She creates online content to provide hope and help.

Her first video Dear Suicidal Me has had over 80 million views all around the world. She went on to create Jessica's Tree, a web series that follows the 24 hours between a friend, Jess, going missing and the discovery of her body. It provides insights into Jessica's struggles, to help people better understand those suffering from depression. Jessica's Tree was viewed more than 230,000 times in the two months following its release in March 2019 and immediately began winning international recognition and awards, including the Huawei Mate30 Pro New Zealand Television Awards 2019 Best Web Series.

The process and the delicate decisions that had to be made to create Jessica's Tree have themselves been documented in a film about Jazz called The Girl on the Bridge, due for release early in 2020.

Jazz is strong, inspiring and helps develop hope!

I listened to this audiobook during my 2nd year of university. Which was very hard for me, stressful, and at times, felt pointless. But I’m here, nearly going into 3rd year. Thankyou Jazz, you’re loved and cared for by many. 🤍

Jazz Thornton and her incredible successes

Wow! Such an amazing story. I admire Jazz Thornton so much, and she has definitely changed mine and many perspectives on mental health. She is so brave to share her story and her journey is almost identical to mine. I see myself in her younger self and I now know that the way to get out of this is to fight. This book will change my life, should be required reading for mental health professionals and people working with young people and children. Incredible, a favourite for sure.

Blown Away! 5*

Jazz is a brilliant mental health advocate with an amazing story to tell. As I listened to this audio book and read the physical copy at the same time, I personally went through a whirl wind of emotions as Jazz’s story unfolded both good events and bad ones.

This story hit home to me in many occasions as i have a very similar background story to Jazz’s, She has included many warning and trigger discretions before divulging into the hard reality of mental health and it’s effects!

Thank you for such a well written book, I’m currently studying to do mental health nursing and will recommend this book to both friends and patients as it is very well explained, offers supportive coping methods and gives this beacon of hope!

Thank you for such an amazing book and thank you for sharing your story! 🤍

Too self absorbed

Too self absorbed; I couldn't listen to her. And too much self-psychoanalysing in a Psychology 101 kind of way; it was boring. And I thought it was disturbing how she thought she could help other girls. I couldn't listen any more after that.

Hope is Real

I listened to this in the space of 2 days almost non stop. Before listening to this I had debated if I could really listen to something that was going to make me think about my own mental health. During the first day of listening I went around my city and stuck signs on bridges and benches with messages of hope and phone numbers of helplines. Personally I knew I had to be focusing on mental health to listen and engage with something that was going to make me think. In some ways my story is similar to Jazz’s but it’s definitely not over. The power of the message in this book is overwhelming and I had the decision to write my own story out for myself. I needed to understand what I was fighting for and so I went to the beginning and have tried to write everything that happened to me so I can process my own story. Jazz is incredible and this story shows everything she has battled with and overcome. This book should be read by everyone from those battling with their own mental illness to those who’ve never had to experience mental illness. Let’s break the stigma of mental illness and keep talking. Hope is Real, Change is Possible!

Fantastic and hopeful

I listened to this book to use as a resource for teenage girls I work with who have similar struggles as the author. This book was real and raw and also hopeful, which doesn’t always happen in memoirs regarding mental health. I also liked how she highlighted the steps she took and the way she actually began engaging in therapy. As a therapist, I’d rate this book 5/5.

beautifully raw

Jazz openly shares her struggles and its incredibly inspiring to hear her story. From the bad, the ugly, the beautiful and everything in between, Jazz seems to just share about it all and its touched my heart during a tender time of loosing my father to the same struggles

Read it and you might save your life

I lost my Mom last year and I've been spiralling since. I found Jazz on TikTok after an add for the app just wouldn't stop coming up. I starting following her and starting learning her story. I knew I wasn't fighting, that I was only surviving that wasn't news to me, I stopped fighting awhile ago. I decided to buy the book but because of Covid it hasn't shipped yet. I heard it was free on audible and had to hear it in her voice. I realized that my identity is just my trauma and the entire time I thought that's just who I am. I thought I owned it that it was mine but really my trauma owns me. I have made multiple attempts throughout my life and I've always known that one day my life would end by suicide, but if I actually start fighting maybe I can own what I've been through. Maybe I can learn to live. So if you're struggling right now choose to read this book it might just open your eyes. Thank you Jazz for sharing your story I am 35 years old and thought I was beyond help.

Insightful

very informative and insightful. I learned a lot and I feel confident in being able to help myself further on my own healing journey as well as knowing what others around me might need all while recognizing that I can't fix others but just be a tool for them to help themselves! I recommend this book to anyone struggling with any mental health issues. I also recommend reading this if ypu haven't personally experienced mental illness but have a loved one who has or is!
