Summary

Fern Brady was told she couldn't be autistic because she's had loads of boyfriends and is good at eye contact. This is a story of how being female can get in the way of being autistic and how being autistic gets in the way of being the 'right kind' of woman.

Critic reviews

"Of course it's funny - it's Fern Brady - but this book is also deeply moving and eye-opening." (Adam Kay)

"It made me laugh out loud and broke my heart and made me weep...I hope absolutely everyone reads this, and it makes them kinder and more curious about the way we all live." (Daisy Buchanan)

"Glorious. Frank but nuanced, a memoir that doesn't sacrifice voice or self-awareness. And it has brilliant things to say about being autistic and being funny." (Elle McNicoll)

Absolutely, unabashedly fantastic. 500/5 stars.

I don’t normally leave reviews but for this book I just had to. I read this in one sitting. It’s rare to find such an honest and open account of an adult woman’s autistic experience, and as an autistic woman myself it’s a life-changing read. Thank you, Fern, from the bottom of my heart for writing this. To anyone reading this review- please read the book. It’s worth it.

Thank you!

As a 40-year-old make, I'm not the target audience for this book, but so much resonated and made sense of many things in my life.

Incredibly insightful and funny at the same time.

Learned a lot about my own ASD daughter and have a lot more insight into how things possibly feel for them! Laughed a lot too which was a massive bonus.

Excellent and honest

Fern is unswervingly honest about the difficulties she's faced in every day life due to her autism. Despite tackling difficult subjects like self-injury there's a certain lightness to her manner. She tells it how it is. Would definitely recommend

interesting, bold and funny

Really enjoyed a look at her young adult life and growing up as an autistic woman. Loved how honest she was and really glad I went for the audiobook over reading it since it's so personal.

Loved it

Really enjoyed listening to Ferns book. I like the way the story was set out, the way certain things impacted her (from events in her youth to the nails!), and the way facts and information were spread throughout. It was great hearing it in her own voice too. It was told in such a relatable way and I was so glad, and sad, to hear what she and so many other have to go through for diagnosis and just every day in a real world context. More people should read this.

Essential listening

Hard to listen to at times but immensely informative and essential listening. Everyone should be made to listen to Fern’s story and reflect on her account.
