About this listen
My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me. A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him.
Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse. Going to the pound because you need something in your life that's worth holding onto is rarely, if ever, mentioned. I asked the man at the pound to show me the biggest dogs they had. He showed me some Rottweiler-German Shepherd puppies that he said would grow to be quite large. Then he showed me a six-month-old Shepherd that would get pretty big. Then he showed me Blue, the largest dog they had. He was as tall as a Great Dane, with the snout of a Collie, the markings of a Siberian husky, the ears and tail of a shepherd and the body of a wolf, with one blue eye and one brown.
Crouched in a sitting position, unable to lie down, unable to sit all the way up, he looked at me from between the bars, and I fell in love. "I'll tell you, lady, he's pretty but he's skittish. He sheds, and I mean sheds. I don't think you want this dog," the man told me. But, I knew I had to have him. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I brought Blue home, and we lived together for years. He was, for most of our relationship, my only companion. But, when I first met Blue, a lifetime ago now, I had family and friends. I worked at a crappy coffeehouse. I was young and lost; I was normal.
Back then, at the beginning of this story, before I'd ever seen a corpse, before Blue saved my life, before I felt what it was like to kill someone in cold blood, I was still Joy Humbolt. I'd never even heard the name Sydney Rye.
P.S. The dog doesn't die.

captivating
there were no blank spots. the story went from one situation to another. I was hooked and found myself enjoying the dry humour. and as for Blue, what can I say but every girl should have one.

Interesting characters
I got these three stories for one credit and on the whole I enjoyed them. The characters wee a bit flat to start off with but gained more depth as the story evolves, and by the end of the third book I really liked how they were evolving. The story is well put together on the whole but the first book especially felt a bit rushed in parts. The characters were thrown from situation to situation without much logic or time to take it in.
The main thing missing, for me, was humour. I prefer characters that make me smile and Sydney Rye is just a bit too serious for me. I’d still recommend this series though, and I’m considering buying the second box set, just to see how the characters evolve.

Unleash the purse strings and buy the box set
For the price of one you can own the first three books in the Sydney Rye series and it is worth it if you like kick ass female Detective stories
Book one UNLEASHED- This is the first in the Sydney Rye/Joy Humbolt series. It starts at the beginning and explains how Joy needs to become a whole new person, after looking into the murder of a client. The body of which she stumbles across while walking his dog. She starts out as a humble dog walk down on her luck -broken up with boyfriend, no job and no future. It soon progresses to mysteries, dead bodies, treasure and revenge. Resulting in the birth of Sydney Rye and a good book.
Book two DEATH IN THE DARK - This story is shorter as only a novella but is still enjoyable. It starts with where book one left off and goes onto explain how Joy has well and truly been left behind and Sydney starts her training to become a detective. No not learning how to collect evidence but how to fight and control Blue, her faithful dog, but it doesn't take long before Sydney ignores her trainer and comes to the add of a local family to right a wrong.
Book 3 INSATIABLE - Sydney has her first case to help track down a missing/runaway girl, but things aren't always what they seem and soon Sydney is on the run from the police and has another dead body in her past. With the help of a group of friends Sydney soon finds herself well and truly caught up in a wed of mistrust, discerption and betrayal were the only option is to keep going forward at all cost.
All three books are good but as a bundle they add a punch. It is the same narrator for all books which is good as she is easy to listen to and made it any enjoyable 20 hours or so. The only reason it got a 4 star was because the first book was a bit slow to get started.

Sydney is so stupid it makes you wish she got killed
These stories are very badly written. its like a series of stupid moves creating one crisis after another followed by unlikely escapes mostly orchestrated by a man. if this is feminist writing about a strong woman Emily Kimmerman needs to go back to feminist school. Don't waste your money. There are far better stories of strong women out there. With brains. The poor voice artist does a good job of the awful material.
