About this listen

Naval Officer Jack Samson thought a posting to the frontier of human-inhabited space was the death blow to his career.

He couldn't have been more wrong. A routine inspection of a small merchant vessel leads to devastating loss and the discovery of strange, fascinating objects. As astonishing discoveries unfold, a mysterious and hostile ship proves that Samson has a competitor in unlocking the secrets of an ancient alien civilization and that humanity might not be alone in the galaxy after all.

My 1st Hamilton sci-fi

I’ve listened to quite a few fantasy books, by Duncan M. Hamilton. This was my first sci-fi of his & it did not disappoint. I quickly got very engaged with the characters & the story moved along really well, to keep it interesting. I’m very much looking forward to the next instalment.

Kept my interest

Well written and excellently read.
Nothing dramatically new here, but hand on heart I must say that I found it an enjoyable read and am looking forward to the next instalment. Hopefully, Harper will still be around.

Good science fiction -

I enjoyed this and wait in anticipation for part two.
Only a couple of small grumbles:
The supposedly upper-crust voice of the protagonist is dreadful.
Book seemed to stop mid sentence

Really enjoyable sci-fi

I liked the pace of the book, and the narrator did an excellent job.

It is a fairly fast-paced and fun listen, and I am looking forward to the next one.

If i was forced to put my finger on something it would be that the main protagonist is suffering slightly from "Gary Stu" syndrome. A little more hardship, and I would bump my rating to 5 stars.

All in all an enjoyable listen!

Horatio Hornblower in space

Not quite the story teller that CS Lewis was
The protagonist comes good through adversity and incompetent senior officers just like hornblower. Story was interesting and I can feel a big reveal in the next instalment
Wish the science bits were more than superficial

Temple Military SciFi

Fantasy is definitely this author’s strength. This was poorly written, cliched, logic flaws, poor characterisation and no world building. The “threat” is very poorly envisaged and repeatedly makes the same mistakes so hardly a highly advanced civilisation. No world building just template military SciFi, there is so much better out there. At best entertaining background while doing something else.

Lazy writing and weird performance choices

The story is acceptable but the writing is lazy. The “science” part of sci-fi is shoddy at best. The worst part is the weird unnatural British accent the American narrator employs for the characters. Bizarre.
