About this listen
A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith. Detective Inspector Fin Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate. For Lewis-born Macleod, the case represents a journey both home and into his past.
Something lurks within the close-knit island community.
Something sinister.
As Fin investigates, old skeletons begin to surface and soon, he, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

Listened in one day! So good.
Having recently visited Harris & Lewis, this book brought the trip back, with vivid descriptions and fabulous storytelling, narrated beautifully. Great story & history.

So much more than just a crime story
The Blackhouse is my third book by Peter May, although chronologically I should probably have started with this one.
There are so many more layers to this book than just solving a crime - it goes deep into childhood infatuations, hidden secrets and forgotten/repressed memories of a young mind, of the thin varnish of respectability, of barely recognized motives, of revenge, and adds the harsh nature of the isles as a fitting backdrop.
Although I read the trilogy out of order, I was surprised and fully satisfied with the dramatic ending. Yes, I did shed tears at appropriate intervals.
The language never gets in the way (as it does happen in other books), and once again Peter Forbes' narration is impeccable.
I will most definitely look forward to any upcoming titles by Peter May. This one is a production I will happily return to.

Love Peter May and Peter Forbes
Brilliantly read just like the other books in the Peter May collection. Peter Forbes brings the characters to life with the change of his voice. The story keeps you gripped, wanting to find the answers but keeps you guessing till the end.

Inputdownable - in an audio way!
I was on the Western Islands in October for a holiday and was interlined taken by its beauty and culture. So, I couldn't resist a story set there. I had not discovered Peter May until now. Read and listened to lots of Rankin.
The story was exciting and intriguing the way it unfolded the layers. Excellent telling by the reader. Off to get the next in the trilogy.

First audiobook ! Loved it
This was the first time I’d listened to an audio book ! Peter May never lets you down . I had read the hard back but it had been a while . I picked up on new lines through the pages . Perfect when you are trying to relax in the Hebridean sunshine .

this was a promising start to the series..........
i'm new to Peter May, i have to say i wish i had read him before. This story is like the real thing , no frills, just life in a hard place.
The story came together well, and i felt that i was carried along and left wanting more of Finn and his life in the harshness of the Scottish highlands.
as usual in all cop books, he is having wife/children/relationship issues, but here it explores his youth and links it into his now, thought it had a nice little twist at the end.

Thoroughly enjoyable book
What did you like most about The Blackhouse?
Enjoyed meeting all the characters
What about Peter Forbes’s performance did you like?
Just love characterisation Peter puts into every character and loved the way he describes the settings/scenery et cetera.
Any additional comments?
Although I listened to this after I had listened to book number two it did not detract in any way. It was good to get the history of the characters. Really looking forward to book number three of this trilogy.

Enjoyable dark mystery with an unusual setting. Pretty solid start to a series. Probably will read another by this author.

Good thriller in unusual setting
Set on the Scottish Island of Lewis, the setting is quite unusual. Despite being relatively short read, author manages to squeeze two books into one - detective story of bloody murder, and psychological story about rediscovering your own past and missed opportunities... Both parts being quite good, so I can recommend this one. I will continue with the next part in a trilogy.
