Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The only question which hangs over the life of Sir Richard Wyndham, notable whip, dandy and Corinthian, is one of marriage. On the eve of making the most momentous decision of his life, he is on his way home, a little worse for drink, when he chances upon a beautiful young fugitive climbing out of a window by means of knotted sheets - and so finds a perfect opportunity for his own escape.
The Corinthian has eveything that Georgette Heyer's devoted readership came to expect and that made her one of the most popular novelists of her day and still adored by a huge audience.

Sad narration
A great book somewhat spoiled by a narrator who mispronounced words and placed emphases wrongly. She did not seem to understand the subtle humour of the book. A great shame.

Classic Heyer
One of Heyer's lighthearted stories spoilt by using a narrator totally unsuited to the style of the story. Unfortunately, the works of the greatest Regency Romance author have not been treated well by the publishers who have appointed narrators not suited to the task in many instances..

Terrible narration
Wooden and monotonous narration ruined an old favourite. These new Penguin editions of Heyer are not good.

A good story strangely read.
This is an awkward reading by someone with a pleasant enough voice but who appears to be reading the book for the first time. This creates a jarring rhythm with unexpected pauses, emphases and cadences in every sentence and odd pronunciations and inflections of many words. An uncomfortable and distracting listen.

Bad narrator
Great Heyer story and characters, but if you haven't read it first then please don't listen to this version. The narrator can't do voices (men sound girly, and everyone sounds the same so you can't tell who's speaking) or accents, but even more annoying is the bizarre choice of word emphasis in most sentences. She stresses words at random with the oddest stops and starts that don't make sense, completely ruining the delivery and butchering the humour. It's like someone reading in a language they don't understand.

Champagne story; porridge delivery
The absence of characterisation by the reader makes it often impossible to know who is speaking until you eventually get to ‘…whispered/interpolated/laughed Sir Richard’. Disappointing.

Good story ruined by poor reading
This is a good Heyer story - full of a great deal of wit, and a slow burn romance. All the more frustrating then that Remmie Milner, who has a pleasant voice, just doesn’t get the prose at all. Most Heyer readings have odd errors in pronunciation, which is bearable, but this reader puts the stress on the wrong words and phrases in almost every sentence. How on earth does this sort of thing get through quality control at Penguin? Maybe no-one involved understands the humour in Heyer? There are some excellent audio versions but this is just not good enough. Painful. I will be writing to Penguin as no one appears to take the slightest notice of the criticisms in these reviews.

Big georgette Heyer fan but disappointed
After reading a review that this was one of her funniest novels I was very disappointed. I am not sure if it was the novel lacking in humour or if it was just that the narrator did not suit this novel. Either way the narrator was not the right choice for this book. She was not annoying or irritating, just unfortunately didn’t suit the novel.
I recommend the audible version of the reluctant widow and sprig Muslin. Brilliant captured here on audible.

Lovely story, issues with reading
One of my favourite stories, but the continual mis-emphasis on the “Sir” in Sir Richard was really off-putting. Some phrases were also obviously not understood and so the inflections were incorrect. Pity.
