About this listen

September 1940 is finally drawing to a close. With London having endured the Blitz for nearly a month, people are calling for vengeance: Britain should retaliate even harder with their own bombing campaign in enemy territory. But once again the night heralds more destruction.

At Custom House, anxious residents dutifully head to the nearest public air-raid shelter as the warning siren wails. When dawn brings the all-clear people disperse, but one man remains - he's dead, stabbed through the heart. As Detective Inspector John Jago begins his investigation, he discovers that the victim was one of a minority - a pacifist. But why, then, was he carrying a loaded revolver in his pocket?

De Ja Boom?

Love the Interplay between Craddick and our intrepid hero of the blitz, but are these stories getting a bit samey?

Superior police procedural.

This is the third book in the Blitz Detective series and the third one that I've read.
Like its two predecessors, it is a very good police procedural - but that short description doesn't do it justice.
As before, the thread of a murder investigation is cleverly interwoven with compelling detail of the period (early WW2) and the place (East London). The characters are well drawn and varied - and Simon Mattacks narration is first class.
I'm looking forward to listening to the later books in the series and to meeting DI Jago and company again.

Air raid shelter murder

Yet another excellent story from Mike Hallow.
It evokes the feelings of the blitz.
The characterisation by the narrator was believable.
Thoroughly recommended.

Enjoyable but...

I enjoyed this story and it’s two predecessors but did this one have a couple of elements in the story that I thought were going to be relevant or reappear later but just seemed to fizzle out or not be fully explained?
I may have to listen again.

Super listen

Great story line with some twists and turns but also some good local history facts that have been forgotten! Can’t wait to continue listening to the next book.

Brought To Life.

A book, a story, a gem. Simon Mattacks brings Jago to life. The storys weave through London during the early days of WW2. Over the two novels we get to know our "hero" and the way he thinks. A very calm assured person but with a hidden sad past of horror in serving in WW1. It's only as we enter this third book that we're starting to see another side to the man, hopefully to continue in the series. Not taxing, simple to follow, just a good story.

Love these books.

I am transported back to East London listening to these books. The narration, for me is perfect, each character comes alive in my head. Can't wait to listen to the next one.
