About this listen
James Denis gives Captain Lacey a task to deliver a mysterious package to a man with an office near the Custom House on the bank of the Thames. Lacey, who has been drawn into danger delivering items for Denis before, opens the package to find a single chess piece - a white queen.
The piece tells Lacey nothing, but he soon realizes it plays deeply into Denis’s ongoing battle for control of London’s underworld.
Meanwhile, Lacey encounters an old army friend just returned from Antigua who is being accused of smuggling and, possibly, murder. Lacey decides to help the man, whom he considers honorable, to clear his name.
But Lacey is drawn farther into the dark games of James Denis and his rival, until only his wits and memories from his past can save himself and his family from gravest danger.
Book 15 in the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries series.

Highly enjoyable
Love these stories. I read most of them some years ago, but not being able to read at the moment, I decided to listen on audible. James Gillies does an excellent job with the voices. He really has brought the characters to life and allowed me to enjoy the stories in a different aspect. I can’t wait for the next instalment, hopefully not too long to wait for an audible version, after the print version in October.

Such a burst of sunshine at a time when needed!
With several lockdowns, I have listened to many books and just as the UK turns a corner and starts building its way out.... joy of joys another Captain Lacey book gets released and my excitement and joy to spend a few precious hours catching up with ALL these beloved characters that I know so well, bursts a pure beam of sunlight upon me!
I honestly think I could listen to these books for hours and upon reaching the end of each one, I feel a mixture of wonder and awe that Ashley Gardener has YET again written another superb plot with twists and turns right up until the end, but I also feel such a sense of loss at having to say goodbye to my freinds 😢 as that’s what these characters have become now, thanks to not only the writing but as ALWAYS the superb narration of James Gillies 🥰
I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend this series to anyone!! They are a joy and delight to listen to!!.....please Ashley Gardener, keep writing these bursts of sunshine 💖
I’m now in love with Brewster lol and as always fascinated by Denis, yet more details on his past would be fascinating!!
Bravo 👏 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Guilty Pleasure
I love these books. They’re massively entertaining and the characters are fun. This one is a mystery full of false turns. My criticism is that white narrators really shouldn’t attempt to do Caribbean accents (or to be honest any they can’t really handle). It’s just cringey.
