About this listen
Madame Katerina, Detective 'Nine Nails' McGray's most trusted clairvoyant, hosts a séance for three of Edinburgh's wealthiest families.
The following morning everyone is found dead, with Madame Katerina being the only survivor. When questioned she alleges a tormented spirit killed the families for revenge.
McGray, even though he believes her, must find a rational explanation that holds up in court, else Katerina will be sentenced to death.
Inspector Ian Frey is summoned to help, which turns out to be difficult as he is still dealing with the loss of his uncle and has developed a form of post-traumatic stress (not yet identified in the 19th century).
This seems an impossible puzzle. Either something truly supernatural has occurred - or a fiendishly clever plot is covering a killer's tracks....

Enjoyable as always
I love the characters of Frey and McGrey. I love the way the stories are written and most of all I love the narration which just brings both the above and all the other characters to life in such an entertaining enjoyable way.
I would be lost of there were no more in this series to listen too!!
The story is not amazing but, is enjoyable and if you have enjoyed the other books then you will enjoy listening to this.

An outstanding story and rendition
This is an excellent series of books and this latest one is simply outstanding. The expansion of the character and role of Frey gives an additional dimension and the further the series moves from McCray’s unlikely past the better, I feel, the stories become.
Andy Secombe’s brilliant narration enhances the story and characterisations.
I look forward massively to the next instalment.

A great story, even though a bit drawn out
I did like the book and the reader is very good. The only thing I found extremely irritating is shouting towards the end. I understand that the story was nearing conclusion and the setting was demanding maybe a bit more passionate reading, however, it was way way way too loud. I had to stop a few times, since it literally gave me a headache. I wish the publishers modulated the loudness just a bit, because it really is at the moment preventing me to actually finish the book. I had to actually skip a few places with shouting and at the moment have to wait for the headache to subside, while writing this review, until I am able to listen to the final chapter. It really is unpleasant and is ruining the whole reading experience.

Victorian Scots Paranormal-adjacent Crime Drama
The title says it all. Everything I need to listen through a whole book in a single day.
