Summary

Pure escapism at every moment, The Distant Shores tells the story of a family torn apart and the woman who will bring them back together.

Margot Hart travels to Ireland to write a biography of the famous Deverill family. She knows she must speak to the current Lord Deverill—JP—if she is to uncover the secrets of the past. A notorious recluse, JP won’t be an easy man to crack. But Margot is determined—and she is not a woman who is easily put off.

What she never expected was to form a close bond with JP and be drawn into his family disputes. Shouldering the blame for running up debts that forced him to sell the family castle, JP is isolated and vulnerable. With help from his handsome son, Colm, it seems as though Margot might be the only one who can restore JP’s fortunes.

Will the family ever succeed in healing rifts that have been centuries in the making?

For Deverill Fans

Having read the first three Castle Deverill books, I hoped this would be the same, yes it carries the story on but it did not have the same feeling as the previous novels. Not sure if it needed the fourth book, but you’ll have to make up your own mind. Lots of time spent with the spirit world which helped span many generations, quite a clever trick to get the back story reminders.

Great story, not great narration

I’ve read all the Deverill instalments so absolutely needed to read the concluding part too… The story does not disappoint, and ties everything up very satisfactorily. The narration however is weird to say the least… For large parts it’s like listening to your satnav reading to you - The intonation sounds like it’s been put through a voice processor. And it’s sloooow… I listened to the entire book on x1.2 speed which I wouldn’t normally do. Anyhoo, great story. Don’t be put off.

A compelling read

Whilst some of the story and characters were difficult to believe, I found the story fascinating and gripping. The thinking about the afterlife, different types of spirits and the causes (and way back from) alcoholism were well thought out and expressed. For anyone with an open mind snd questions it has much more to it than expected. Recommended.

Bit disappointing

I really wanted to like this and it was lovely to revisit some of the characters from the trilogy, but it just felt flat to me. There was an awful lot of recap through the spirit world and it was heavily focused in the spirit world at times which I’m not so keen on. It did feel like it was a book written for the sake of it rather than to complete the story. The 3rd book of the trilogy finished nicely and although I enjoyed the 4th book a lot, really there was no need for this one or the 4th book. The ending was also very over the top on the love element and how love is so important etc etc. to the point that it was a bit sickly, even for me!
The narrator was ok but there was at least one error in her narration where she repeated herself having got a word wrong. For some reason I also could hear her breathing a lot more than other narrators and her taking breaths in between speaking, it was a bit of a distraction at times but I did get used to it.

End of an era

I liked this book, but not as much as the others in the series. I think the first 3 were my favourite, and the last 2 not so good. But that’s probably because I prefer the era/ time the first three were set in rather than modern day. However, this book did tie up all the loose ends and it was good to get closure to it. I’m not sure all the spirits/ghosts parts were necessary. I liked the little recaps because I had forgotten some things and it was nice to think about the old characters again. Narration was good. Overall- glad I read it. Also glad I can put the Deverills to bed now!

Very good

Like all the series very good. A few annoying voices but I haven’t been to Ireland so maybe they are true accents.
