Summary

The third title in the John Puller series to follow Zero Day and The Forgotten. Military CID investigator, John Puller, has returned from his latest case in Florida to learn that his brother, Bobby, on death row at Leavenworth Military Prison for national security crimes, has escaped.

Preliminary investigations show that he may have had help in his breakout. Now he's on the run, and in disguise, and he's the military's number-one target. John Puller has a dilemma. Which comes first, loyalty to his country or to his brother? Bobby has state secrets that certain people will literally kill for. But blood is thicker than water, and the brothers are close although even John does not know for sure what Bobby really did for the government, nor if he's even guilty of his crimes. It becomes swiftly apparent, however, that Bobby's role was powerful and far-reaching. With the help of John's long-time friend and colleague, General Julie Carson, both brothers move closer to the truth from their opposing directions. And this case puts John Puller in a place he thought he'd never be, on the other side of the law, where even his skills as an investigator, and his strength as a fighter, might not be enough to save him. And his brother.

Male narrator difficult listening.

Enjoyed this but was overall seriously marred by male narrator's voice, it almost sounded as though he was drunk! particularly as the female was crystal clear.
If the same narrator pops up elsewhere it is unlikely I would purchase the book.

Narration Not Great

Would you try another book written by David Baldacci or narrated by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ?

My first David Baldacci on Audible, didn't enjoy the narration. This may sound a little strange, but Ron McLarty sounds too much like he is reading the book, is a bit stilted and his characterisation is not great. Sound effects are also not necessary and are a bit rubbish.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Have always enjoyed reading David Baldacci, so no problems with the story

Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Haven't listened to any previous performances from these narrators, but have listened to a number of other books by different narrators/ authors and the performance (in my opinion) isn't as good.

Book 3

Very well written and well structured, needless to say that I am more than happy to be looking forward to the next book.

Good but...

Very original storyline intricate well thought out with a few surprises
My only criticism is that the narrator sometimes seems to be shouting or at least has a very loud Voice
The two readers male and female worked well but personally I didn't like the associated music and sound effects in some parts
Top marks for the plot

Badly narrated

The narrator speaks very loudly. There is no intonation to his voice. It's very hard to differentiate between the male and female characters, in fact it feels like they're not in the room, but put together after recording.
The story is also quite difficult to follow and somewhat boring.
I purchased this book because I really enjoyed ;The 6:20 Man.

Great book but....

I have 3 gripes, 1. Shinned his light, shinned not shone? 2. Lighted the room not lit, and 3, and the most annoying, is the sound effects! This is an audio book, we don't need music and gun fire etc, I would just be dozing off and bam, you're jolted back to being wide awake. I think it would've beenfar better had it just had narration.
On the whole I would still highly recommend this book as the story is great, especially if you have listened to the previous 2 in the series.

Hard to keep characters straight

I really enjoyed this story and the performance was great, though I don't like the spooky, meaningful music and sound effects. That's just my opinion. The problem I have/had was keeping Peller separate in my mind from Lee Child's Jack Reacher. To me, the two characters are very much alike and their family circumstances are similar, as is their history of military service (except that John is still active duty.) I'd still recommend the book. Baldacci is a great storyteller.
