Summary

From master storyteller Ken Follett, The Evening and the Morning is a historical epic that ends where The Pillars of the Earth begins.

A Time of Conflict
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. The king’s grip on the country is fragile and chaos reigns. A young boat builder dreams of a better future after a devastating Viking raid shatters the life he hoped for.

Lives Intertwined
A Norman noblewoman follows her husband to a new land only to find her life there shockingly different; and a capable monk at Shiring Abbey has a vision of transforming his humble home into a centre of learning admired throughout Europe.

The Dawn of a New Age
Now, with England at the dawn of the Middle Ages, these three people will each come into dangerous conflict with a ruthless bishop, who will do anything to increase his wealth and power, in an epic tale of ambition, rivalry, love and hate.

Thirty years ago we were introduced to Kingsbridge in The Pillars of the Earth, and now in this prequel, international bestseller Ken Follett will take us on a journey into a rich past, which will end where his masterpiece begins.

Another great book from Follet

Not entirely sure where the low ratings are coming from. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it takes unexpected twists and turns, keeping you wondering what will happen next.

I ended up binge listening to it and now I'm sad it's over...

A new classic from Follett

So so satisfying to dive back into Follett's world like the first time it engulfed me with Pillars when I was 12 and later the subsequent sequels. An absolute pleasure that briefly made me ponder about which series I'd like to finish before eventually it's time to go.

I love that while the language is simple all personalities are far from one-dimensional, though Follett clearly has a penchant for perching hoodies vs baddies. For me this book came at the perfect time: the cold season for me brings the desire for cosy nights and days with a story or a tale while working on something with my hands.

The narration, as always with this narrator, is excellent. His voice had become synonymous with story time and a mental break from the day-to-day. Wish it never ended!

Enjoyable but slightly annoying

I love Ken Follett as an author but this novel took giving the baddies free reign to behave horrendously too far in my opinion. Checks and balances , there were moments I nearly stopped listening .

First Audio book!

This is an amazing fictional tale brought to life with superb narration. The plot twists and winds. I am a photographer and listen during long hours of editing. It’s made my life a far happier place over the last two weeks and I find myself looking forward to work now :-)

If you like historical fiction read beautifully then get listening.

Wonderful story. I would love to say what I loved most but it would give too much away!

Twists and turns, lots of surprises and frustrating situations. Spell binding story. Loved every second of it 😊

Brilliant

Put off reading this book after I’d finished the Kingsbridge series as I thought going back before the start of the first book would be a detriment to the story. How wrong I was, loved this book soooo…… good.
