Six Students. One Murder. Your Time Starts Now...

The students of Royal Hastings University's new Multimedia Art course have been trouble from day one. Acclaimed artist Alyson wants the department to revolve around her. Ludya struggles to balance her family and the workload. Jonathan has management experience but zero talent for art. Lovely Patrick can barely operate his mobile phone, let alone professional design software. Meanwhile blustering Cameron tries to juggle the course with his job in the City and does neither very well. Then there's Jem. A gifted young sculptor, she's a promising student... but cross her at your peril.

The year-long course is blighted by accusations of theft, students setting fire to one another's artwork, a rumoured extra-marital affair and a disastrous road trip. But finally they are given their last assignment: to build an interactive art installation for a local manufacturer. With six students who have nothing in common except their clashing personal agendas, what could possibly go wrong?

The answer is: murder. When the external examiner arrives to assess the students' essays and coursework, he becomes convinced that a student was killed on the course and that the others covered it up. But is he right? And if so, who is dead, why were they killed, and who is the murderer? Only a close examination of the evidence will reveal the truth. Your time starts now...

Wonderfully acted and absolutely loved it.

Riveting from the beginning and the little doors which open throughout giving that little bit of insight to the plot are wonderfully done. Loved it and will listen to again in future as am sure there’s bits I didn’t pick up on!

Love half of it

As often I find with this wonderful imaginative writer that I enjoy the story immensely up until the plot will be revealed. I find myself thinking it is too complicated, who did what after I finish her books. Still an enjoyable read and it is impressive the way she pieces together the evidence and the mystery. My three star rating is to do with the ending being a bit shaky.

How to do an audiobook.

I've listened to a few audio versions of Janice Hallet's previous books but after having read them first. This time I went straight to audio and it was excellent - the cast were amazing, really engaging (and some dislikeable) characters with a plot that keeps you second guessing to the end. As usual the story unfolds through WhatsApp and message boards, this time in a very recognizable academic environment. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Incoming Message tones

I had to return this. In certain sections of the book there are frequent incoming message tones (to signify different characters messaging each other). Lots of people will not be bothered by this, but for me it makes it impossible to listen to. I find it really distracting.

Real shame - I was looking forward to it.

The plot was just too convoluted

Brilliant performances and I wanted to love the story, but it kept lurching in increasingly odd directions.

Every bit as brilliant as the other books!

I’ve listened to all the other titles and just like those I was gripped by this book from start to finish. It’s such an intriguing mystery and unlike other books of this genre I don’t guess what the twists are or how it ends! Can’t wait for another now…

Flawed by ignorance

Given the importance of precision in analysing the evidence in the cases JH offers us, it was deeply irritating to see how little effort had been made to understand the process of examining and running a postgraduate course. The inaccuracies made nonsense of the plot and motivation. Given the basic principles involved are not difficult to grasp, it seemed to suggest a laziness or arrogance I had not expected from this author. Actors were excellent, though.

Could not put it down. Brilliant

If there is a more consistently ingenious and entertaining writer out there then please let know. All her books have been spectacularly entertaining and this one is gripping. I started listening early while on holiday and didnt my headphones off until it finished - on the first day of a beach holiday!
