Summary

After a grisly murder in a shabby New York bookstore, Detective Callum Doyle starts receiving sinister phone calls. Doyle is told more deaths are planned but the caller will give him clues, on the condition that he keeps them to himself. As more vicious deaths follow, the pressure on Doyle to find a link becomes unbearable. Does he continue to gamble with people’s lives? Or should he sacrifice everything to defeat a ruthless and manipulative enemy?

"Recalls Harlan Coben – though for my money Jackson is the better writer." ( Guardian)

Average but engaging thriller

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes I enjoyed it as an easy listen (a break from Wolf Hall which I am having problems getting through). It was also an ideal audio book as it was easy to pick up / put down.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

One of the voices was really silly and fake, but it turns out there is a reason this character has such a silly voice, however it is still irritating to listen to.

Any additional comments?

I would rate this 3.5 stars. It's a decent thriller which progresses at a good pace, and I did enjoy it, however I felt the storyline had been done before. A rogue cop gets contacted directly by a man with clues to crimes which the cop has to solve to prevent more deaths. Instead of telling colleagues what's happening he sets off to solve the crimes himself. The plot is a bit silly in that respect, but the descriptions of the crimes are detailed and, as the reader gets to know people before they become victims, we care about what happens to them. However several of the plot twists were predictable (although the revelations at the conclusion were a surprise). I like the sense of satisfaction that comes with guessing correctly what will happen next, but it was frustrating waiting for the main character to catch on. I don't want to give away the ending but it all seemed a bit random and lots of 'telling' with long sections of dialogue. Overall a good read that doesn't require much concentration.

Very well read and a great twist

I really enjoyed this. The narrator really drew me in with his voices for all the different characters and the plot kept me guessing all the way.

Fantastic book!

This book does seem to have mixed reviews. But I found it gripping and an excellent sequel to pariah. I look forward to listening to the last 2 books in this series. Brilliant!

Great

A well put together, keep you guessing story, as. All these author's books are. The different characters are well-defined and easily identifiable. I just wonder how many more stories can be written targeting this one cop. The narration is superb and the voices great.

Decent yarn, shame about Doyle…

Decent enough plot which might have been a bit more intriguing a few years back. Shame the main character is so unlikeable, sleazy misogyny feels very 1990s. One and done on this series for me.
