Summary

Self-initiation is killing our young men. Without strong mentors, boys are walking alone into a wilderness of conflicting messages about who they should be as men. It's no wonder that our sons are confused about what the world expects from them and what they should expect of themselves.

The Intentional Father is the antidote. This concise book is filled with practical steps to help men raise sons of consequence—young men who know what they believe, know who they are, and will stand up against the negative cultural trends of our day. Jon Tyson lays out a clear path for fathers and sons that includes specific activities, rites of passage, and significant "marking moments" that can be customized to fit any family.

It's not enough to hope our sons will become good men. We need them to be good at being men. This book shows how fathers, grandfathers, and other male mentors can lead the way.

Some good advice

There are some nuggets of good advice in this book. However, I didn’t notice that it was a Christian book. I used to be a Roman Catholic when I was a child, but I’m now an atheist. I’m not comfortable with the author’s assumption that you need to be a Christian in order to be a good person. I think I have the intelligence and desire to teach my son to be a good person without having to believe in God. Even Christians are atheists in the sense that they don’t believe in the thousands of Gods that others have and continue to worship.

Powerful stuff!

A deeply challenging but ultimately encouraging book on how to raise your son(s). Jon Tyson speaks from a place of deepest longing to see young men discipled into manhood by their fathers and to rally the Christian fathers of this world around the principles of intentionality, imparting and ultimately fathering. Thanks Jon for this much needed book!

Loved it

Really great content - John is gracious in sharing his journey and super honest that it’s not a direct formula to follow. His questions are excellent - I’m glad I’ve listened to this before my son turns 13 and I have many years to plan and prep. Thank you John for taking the time to put your journey into words - very much appreciated.
