Summary

Nonstop suspense from the Sunday Times best-selling author: Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer and closes in on a shocking suspect - a sitting judge.

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching 40, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change.

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby's father was murdered 20 years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure and most important: he knows the law.

He is a judge, in Florida - under Lacy's jurisdiction.

He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him without becoming the next name on his list?

The Judge's List is by any measure John Grisham's most surprising, chilling novel yet.

"When Grisham gets in the courtroom he lets rip, drawing scenes so real they're not just alive, they're pulsating." (Mirror)

I like John Grisham’s books but this book was not in the top range

It is very slow until about half way through and then it began to gather pace but by the end, I felt it was rushed and trying to pack the conclusions with insufficient detail as to how the killer had planned and executed his revenge., especially the piece in the car dump. The victims’ characters were rather wooden and information about them was rather skimpy

The narrator was good with clear diction and made you interested in the main strands of the lives of the two women who were closely involved.

So good.

John Grisham and Mary-Louise Parker a combination made in audiobook heaven. I’ve listened to quite a few lately which have been very underwhelming! Especially those written by some authors I’ve loved for years. This did not disappoint. Next!

Totally absorbing!

Loved it. Good pace, intrigung plot, logical detail enabling listener to follow without frequent back-ups. Reminiscent of author's earlier books - sharp characters and believable storyline. A really great listen and very well narrated - no extremes of voice to identify speakers. Just excellent intonation, speed and clarity.

Started off good but fell short at the end

Really good story to begin with although a little repetitive in parts. Narrator had a nice style and enjoyed her voice. However, the ending was very disappointing and simply fizzled out, it was almost as though the writer had got fed up or run out of ideas and just ended it, not what I would expect from John Grisham.

not his best

story was OK, not his best. what really let it down was the narrator - i speeded up the play speed but even so the strange way the wrong words were stressed made the book drag.

Is Grisham going off the boil?

Don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of John Grisham having listened or read almost every book he has written and I buy his new books on the day their released in the UK but I can't help thinking that for the last three years his books have gone off the boil. The tension I felt while reading his earlier books have disappeared from his recent books. As regards the Judge's List it's great when compared to novels by other writers but very average when compared to Grisham's earlier work. There is a saying in Welsh - Nid da lle gellir gwell!! (Not good when it could be better).

Hard to say about the book - reader put me off storyline

I’m a big fan of Grisham books this is my first audible of one. I got totally distracted by the narrator. At points I couldn’t pick up on the dialog because everything was read in one tone so got confused who was saying what to whom. When she did put some infliction into it I had no idea why. Confusing. Other books I’ve listened to the reader tends to give each character a voice. This is the first audio book I’ve listened to that’s had none. Sorry.

A Cracking Good Read!

I really enjoyed this book; it kept me engrossed right up to the end. I started it last night and finished it today. Beautifully read by Mary-Louise Parker. John Grisham is such a good storyteller.
