Story
When Michelle Thomas suffered her first major depressive episode six years ago, she read and watched and listened to everything about mental health she could get her hands on in an effort to fix herself. God, it was tedious. And, quite frankly, depressing. Which is the last thing she needed. What she did need was a therapist who would listen and offer a wellness strategy catered to her specific needs. What she got was advice to watch a few YouTube videos and a cheerful reminder that 'it could be worse'.

Story
Why do good people so often do nothing when a small intervention could make a big difference? Pioneering psychologist Catherine Sanderson demystifies the mindset of bullies and bystanders to show why courage comes at such a high cost, and how we can learn to be brave. We are bombarded every day by reports of bad behaviour: from sexual harassment to political corruption, from bullying to corporate greed. We believe these things are wrong or even evil, but in practice few of us choose to intercede.

Story
Legions of self-help authors rightly urge personal development as the key to happiness, but they typically fail to focus on its most important objective: hardiness. Though that which doesn't kill us can make us stronger, as Nietzsche tells us, few authors today offer any insight into just how to springboard from adversity to strength. It doesn't just happen automatically, and it takes practice. New scientific research suggests that resilience isn't something with which only a fortunate few of us have been born, but rather something we can all take specific action to develop.

We are not powerless over our addictions, nor are we helpless victims of heredity, a disease, a spiritual malady, or a slew of character defects that require the intervention of a "higher power," and a lifetime of meetings to control. Studies show that 75% of all addicts recover on their own, without pills, patches, rehabs, or self-help groups. How many people do you know who successfully quit smoking “cold turkey,” without artificial aids or programs, and nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on earth.

The key to living a happier, healthier life is inside us. Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and - let's be honest - somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy.

I am surprised but this really works
I have read a lot of personal development books in my time, had given up on finding strategies to change and I was resigned to just muddle through my difficulties. But this book is different. There is no quick fix and in fact you need to have patience to do things slowly and the capacity for self reflection. Shahroo doesn’t tell you what to you but show you how to see how you mess up and get in the way in the first place. She also points out that falling down as you make progress is also part of your journey. Loved her voice and I can see why she is a great therapist. The PDF files for the written exercises were a little confusing as she doesn’t tell you in the Audio book when to use them. In the end I found it easier to get the paperback from Amazon so I could move back and forward when I needed. You can do this on the Kindle but I wanted a physical book. For the first time in a long time I feel hopeful about solving my problems. Thank you Shahroo.

Be kind to yourself
I suspect that this book by behavioural change specialist Shahroo Izadi has much in common with other self help books. What makes it different from the others, however, is that the author has been there herself having struggled with weight management and can relate her own challenges with the advice she gives to others in this guide. It is a relatively short book, and around the first third is devoted to informing the reader/ listener why this works and how it can be applied to help a person change their behaviour. By the time it gets to the section that actually outlines what the Kindness Method actually entails the reader / listener has been suitably conditioned into complying with the instructions. I suspect many people will want to cut to the chase and go straight to the guts of what this book is about. This book works best with the support of a qualified counselor and whilst the methodology is possibly nothing groundbreaking in terms of its content (self assessment, maps and targets) it would form a useful framework for anyone suck in a cycle of negative behaviour who wants to break out and change. Where this book does differ is that it is not as judgmental as other methods and acknowledges that we should set attainable goals and be kind to ourselves.

Now bought the book
I was really interested in this book which took me by surprise as I don’t like self help books.
The author is informal and relatable and the theory of being kind to yourself is oddly radical.
I bought the book as soon as I finished the audiobook and bought a journal too, so I could do the work as the book recommends. I was really motivated to do the programme but it’s now been three weeks and I still haven’t opened the book...

Not for Everybody
I wanted to really love this book but was totally disappointed. Quite a chunk of it is about dealing with negative self talk, lack of morale and feeling proud of yourself. The other chunk is about dealing with drug addiction, drinking and over-eating problems. If you don't relate to any of the above, there is hardly any value addition.
The author also makes the assumption that we are likely to have picked the book because something has gone awfully wrong (Sigh). While the tone of the book may work for 1-2-1 counselling, it is a bit condescending for a general self help book. The narration was a bit monotonous especially when the author was reading out statements that we could fill in.
The book is great for people with addiction issues or suffering from negative self talk. However, it is definitely not for people who already treat themselves kindly, who are proud of their achievements and who are not battling with addiction of any sort. Also, if you want to get it, you will be better off with a paper back than the audible format.

Real, practical and grounded
This book was recommended to me by a fellow Life Coach when I realised that short term goals and beating-up self assessments weren’t working for me or my clients. I was hooked instantly when Sharoo told her own story and her real life work. This practical, real and grounded approach was appealing and useable. It’s short, full of action and mercifully free of baffling theory. Thanks Sharoo for the inspiration, empathy and action.
