Summary

As Botswana awaits the familiar blessing of the rains and their eternal cycle, upheaval is taking place at the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Not only is Mr J. L. B. Matekoni attempting to reform himself into a modern husband but, following her marriage to Phuti Radiphuti, Mma Makutsi has joyful news. With the arrival of an heir to the Double Comfort furniture empire and Mma Makutsi busy with motherhood, cobras and a senior aunt, Mma Ramotswe must grapple alone with tea-making, detective work and a new uncertainty.

Disturbing developments over the will of local dignitary Edgar Molapo point to fraud and a shocking family secret, while tracing the source of a smear campaign against the Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon, in which notorious troublemaker Violet Sephotho may or may not have a hand, requires a keen eye and an open mind. But the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is resilient and adaptable, and change brings salutary lessons: our enemies are not always obvious; a snake under the bed may be an ally; and a mother's love conquers all.

A pleasure to listen to

What made the experience of listening to The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon the most enjoyable?

Another trip to Botswana to revisit Mma Ramotswe and others in Alexander McCall's series of stories. As always, the rich storyline and insightful characters instantly transport you to another world. Sheer escapsim and very enjoyable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have two in particular: Mma Makutsi for her outspoken remarks which are not very diplomatic but are often comical and usually go straight to the heart of the matter. Also Mma Potokwani the head of the orphanage, who is a very strong character and can always be relied on for help and advice (usually with excellent fruit cake)

What does Adjoa Andoh bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The story is read in an accent natural to southern Africa which adds to the feeling of actually being with the characters in Botswana.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part when Mma Ramotswe offers Mma Makutsi a partnership in the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. She does this out of love and friendship, going far beyond the relationship of employer and employee

Any additional comments?

I've read or listened to almost all of this series of stories and have never tired of them, each new story is of the same high standard as the preceding ones, and always anticipated with relish

Another engaging tale

Homespun observations cast in a very laid-back detective framework set in the hot Botswana countryside. Various tales interwoven skilfully by McCall Smith and brilliantly and engagingly read by Adjoa Andoh. One can only smile and enjoy the gentle passage of time and tale.

Never disappoints

Both McCall Smith and the narrator are excellent in this addition to the stories of the No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

Utter, Utter Joy!

Absolutely loved this book, the gentle pace, the comedic timing, the plot twists and of course, cake and Bush tea! I wish and I hope that they restart the series again and bring Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makuti back to the TV screen! The world needs this slow pace, kindness and respect back now more than ever, not to mention the sunshine! My only criticism is that Mma Makutsi is rendered into a shrill hag by the narrator, which is a shame, it took some time for my ears to adjust. Having said that, I have downloaded another 3 books!

Just lovely

I’m working my way through this series and I just think these are delightful books.
The narrator is excellent and her accents really bring the story alive.
Mr McCall Smith writes with real insight into human nature, along with wit and warmth. I love this glimpse into a slower and nicer society, they live like we were meant to; I think. His characters are people I would like to know and I really enjoy spending time with them by listening to these stories.
No sex, bad language, vampires or all the other stuff we are constantly bombarded with.
