Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Fern had recently entered her 60s when a series of life-altering events threw her into the eye of the storm. Both her parents passed away, her 20-year marriage ended, and the pandemic was looming.
Faced with an uncertain future, Fern decided that if she wanted to start over, now was the time. She moved to Cornwall, where she reconnected with her true self and instead of fearing getting older, she chose to create a glorious new life full of friendship, fun and adventure.
Fern explores the joy and challenges of aging with warmth and humour. She reflects back on all she has learnt, from enduring tough times to embracing new opportunities and learning how to be kinder to herself. This wasn’t a moment of empowerment, for that would suggest she never had any power to begin with. As women, we often put our needs aside, and she feels strongly that it’s time for us to repower and rediscover our happiness.
In The Older I Get, join Fern as she candidly shares her experiences of grief and loss, rebuilding confidence and exploring new passions, as well as the importance of finding friends you can put the world to rights with over a couple of Cosmos.

Lessons in repowerment
I have long held a desire to sit down for a good old natter with Fern Britton over a mug of tea and a slice of cake and, after listening to the audible version of this book, this ambition has not waned.
Just as one should never judge a book by its cover one should also not take for granted the warm and friendly persona Fern conveys on television. We are often urged to be kind as everyone may be facing a battle we know nothing about. Here she lays bare, with remarkable candour, her fears about growing older, her traumas, her battle to cope with lockdown and her quest to repower herself whilst inspiring others to do the same. All this is presented with the warmth, the honesty and the integrity we have come to expect from her.
If I have one niggle it’s that the blurb accompanying the book appears to suggest it is aimed primarily at women and, indeed, she rightfully writes from a female perspective but I disagree that this book is ‘only for women’ and prospective readers should not assume that it is. I’m convinced her wise (and often humorous) words will resonate with anyone over 60 (and I’m definitely over 60) and there are poignant moments as well as laugh out loud bits (I’ll just make brief reference to a plate of biscuits) that will have you nodding in agreement. In short, what she has to say makes sense - perfect sense and will encourage the reader/listener to think about taking stock of their own lives.
I don’t doubt this book will find its way under the Christmas tree in many a household this year; it’s an intelligent, honest, uplifting read albeit a stark departure from her fictional work and, having bought and enjoyed the audio version, I fervently hope a copy makes its way to mine.

Just what the Dr ordered
My life is about to change; redundancy, empty nest syndrome, down sizing to new house and new area. This book is exactly what I needed. I love Fern's candidness and frankness. Life isn't a bowl of roses, as soon as you think you have it sorted, something comes along and gives you a curve ball. Fern explains this with her usual charm and humour. I would love to be Two Cups or Boo, they are lucky ladies being friends to such a lovely lady.

An enjoyable listen .
I didn’t dislike anything it was fabulous . Fern swims in the sea so do I .
She eats her tea at 17.00 so do I .
She stands out as being a normal person and enjoys the things we all do at a certain age .
Age doesn’t stop you from doing anything .

Great listen
I've always loved Fern. I saw her talk about this book on The One Show and instantly pre ordered. It popped into my library the day I went down with a kidney infection! As a consequence I read it in a couple of days while I was recovering. I loved it. I'm nearly 63 & I have repowered. Leading up to the pandemic my younger & only sister died. During the pandemic my mum died, I got divorced and turned 60 so there are parallels. At 62 I have a lovely new partner and enjoy living on my own. I didn't 'need' this book I enjoyed it. Fern comes across as warm and positive and I'm so envious of her living in Cornwall, my dream is North Devon. One day I hope to stop working and live there. For now I'm loving my life. An enjoyable, easy read, which I'll likely dip into again when I'm feeling down.

Awful
So superficial with advice that is glib as well as dated and unhealthy. Very disappointing.
