Summary

Twenty years ago, Melanie Stokes was abandoned in a Boston hospital, then adopted by a wealthy young couple. Gifted with loving parents, a doting brother, and an indulgent uncle, Melanie has always considered herself lucky. Until the first cryptic, threatening note arrives: “You Get What You Deserve.”

Melanie has no memory of her life before the adoption. Now someone wants her to remember it all - even the darkest nightmare the Stokes family ever faced: the murder of their first daughter. As Melanie pursues every lead and chases every shadow in search of her real identity, two seemingly unrelated events from her past will come together in a dangerous explosion of truth.

The narrator is so bad I gave up

This is the first audiobook I've returned because I couldn't stand the narrator. I started this book 3 times and think I managed to listen to half an hour in total, but I had to stop. Her voice is SO BORING. The intonation in the sentences is all wrong -- and too similar. There is nothing to keep you listening. My mind kept wandering to other things. It's hard to define what exactly is wrong with her voice. The audio sample gives you a brief hint, but that sounds like it was from a more interesting part of the book. The half hour I listened to was turgid. So, combine that with the narrator, it did NOT make for good listening.

This was my 4th novel by Lisa Gardener and I fear I must give up. The first one I listened to was Before She Disappeared. Both the story and the narrator were excellent. The next one was Catch Me. I did NOT like it one bit. The third was One Step Too Far, the follow up to Before She Disappeared. It was very disappointing. I made it to the end, but it wasn't very enjoyable. And now there's this. It seems like Before She Disappeared was a fluke.

Would I listen to another Lisa Gardner audiobook? Possibly.
Would I listen to another audiobook read by Brittany Pressley? No. You couldn't pay me to listen to her again.

Great book

Really enjoyed the story but performance ‘not so much’!
One of the worst Irish accents I’ve ever heard.

brilliant

I thought this was going to be mediocre as it was free but I was impressed, loved the story and I would definitely recommend (I've already told my sister about it) I'm now off to look at the authors other books.

Great book

I've read a lot of Lisa Gardner and was intrigued to learn this was published 20 years ago. I was quickly hooked on the characters and plot, finishing it in a short space of time. Excellent twists right up to the end. Strongly recommend
