Summary

From the critically acclaimed author of Hekla’s Children comes a dark and haunting tale of our world and the next.

Fleeing from a traumatic break-in, Londoners Paul and Tricia Feenan sell up to escape to the isolated Holiwell village where Tricia has inherited a property. Scattered throughout the settlement are centuries-old stones used during the Great Plague as boundary markers. No plague-sufferer was permitted to pass them and enter the village. The plague diminished, and the village survived unscathed, but since then each year the village trustees have insisted on an ancient ceremony to renew the village boundaries, until a misguided act by the Feenans’ son then reminds the village that there is a reason traditions have been rigidly stuck to, and that all acts of betrayal, even those committed centuries ago, have consequences....

Awesomely Creepy

🧡 I love stories of vengeance and this has it in spades (and sickles). I’m also fascinated by the plague. In short, I was in this all the way.

💚 My spine tingled from start to finish. Big thumbs up there. Just one well-paced creep-fest. There were two timelines (mediaeval and present day) and the two converged over the course of the novel.

💜 Warning: There are two instances of animal cruelty. I forwarded through these parts and it didn’t affect the story.

💙 This was my first James Brogden, but not my last. Another one of his, Hekla’s Children, is also free on Audible. And - wait - yes, it’s now in my library.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 Matthew Lloyd Davies is utterly compelling in his performance. It was like being put under a spell. Accents, narratives and moods, he switched between them flawlessly. Not that I’m surprised. The man is a Royal Shakespeare Company frequent flyer after all. He knows a thing or two about a thing or two.

🎧 Lots of characters, lots of plot threads. That means attention is required throughout. No zoning out because your pasta’s boiled over. It’s worth the clean up.

So interesting, compelling. Great listen, the narrator was good too. I need more by this author

Enjoyable gruesome listen...

I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the other James Brogden I read - courtesy of my audible membership ! - but I definitely enjoyed it enough to actually risk one of my previous credits on the next one. "Plague Stones" took a while to actually get going, and I found the voice that Matthew Lloyd Davis chose to use for Hester really grating (although I suppose that was the point !!) but overall another good plot mixing history and horror, and another recommended listen.

Decent Enough Ghost Story

Not a fan of ghost stories but this had a good balance of present day and back-story/ghost provenance to make it a decent read. The plague was a great source to draw on and the idea of the village a good one too.

Characters were a bit two dimensional but perfectly readable.

Narration veered between fine and utterly ridiculous. Even when a voice was described as ‘ordinary girl’ the narrator felt the need to do an impression of the Exorcist- really off putting. .

Brilliant creepy horror!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book: brilliant story line and brilliant narration. I couldn’t stop listening! Can’t wait to listen to more of his novels.

Holds nothing back!

An interesting plague story. Gripping and unnerving especially after Covid. If you like a happy ending this is not for you.

Engaging

An engaging story maybe a little overstretched and could have been further edited in a few areas . I kept going to the end and really enjoyed the narration as it really brought the story to life . The folklore elements were also interesting too.

Past meets the present

Very enjoyable story. A new angle on the Black Death. Very entertaining and original with great characterisations and a diabolical baddie.

Absolutely brilliant

One of the best books I’ve read, and I’ve read many thousands.
Excellent plot and character development. Solid story progression and the intertwined timelines worked perfectly.
If there was one thing I’d have liked more of it would have been more about the research on Hester carried out by Stephane. That’s just the couch detective in me though.
A highly recommended read.
I look forward more by this author.
