About this listen

A decade ago, teacher Nathan Brookes saw four of his students walk up a hill and vanish. Only one returned, Olivia, starved, terrified, and with no memory of where she’d been. Questioned by the police but released for lack of evidence, Nathan spent the years trying to forget.

When a body is found in the same ancient woodland where they disappeared, it is first believed to be one of the missing children but is soon identified as a Bronze Age warrior, nothing more than an archaeological curiosity. Yet Nathan starts to have horrific visions of the students, alive but trapped. Then Olivia reappears, desperate that the warrior’s body be returned to the earth - for he is the only thing keeping a terrible evil at bay.

British Horror Fantasy At Its Best *****

I really enjoyed this book. It’s very different and extremely unique, in such a way that I found refreshing. The Story it’s self is absolutely fantastic. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but as with all of James’ books; research, plot, characters are so impeccably detailed. You really do get to know his characters , this coupled with some frightening and disturbing horror makes this a tightly woven narrative story of exciting and unexpected events. The Voice acting of Matthew Loyd is brilliant, he really does bring this amazing story to life. The way he is able to differentiate between each character is awesome. There were parts where his talents were so strong that he made me jump. Mr Loyd Davis Al’s was very endearing when the story was almost sad, but he carried it off very well. I Highly Recommend this Audible Book and the Kindle book too.

Heklas Children

Yes, I did struggle to finish this one I'm afraid. Enjoyable in parts but ultimately I lost interest and found I wasn't invested in the characters.
Overall I was just found it slightly disappointing as the storyline was promising .

Intriguing storyline kept me guessing till the end

Great narration, I liked the concept, lots of description in some parts but at times too little in others so had me rewinding to answer questions I had formed along the way. Legend of villain well established but actual actions not particularly embellished. Overall though, a good read-have already recommended.

Good but....

. Be careful where yyiu listen if not using earbuds as it's full of blue language.
I was confused about the outcome of the Nathan character. Maybe I missed something.

Darkly Thrilling, Compelling, But Complicated

🧡 This is a mix of a cold case missing persons mystery and a supernatural thriller. Think Harlan Coben’s The Woods meets The Ruins by Scott Smith.

💚 Listen to this for the gruesome supernatural drama and eerie mystery.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 This was well performed and produced. But this is a high concentration listen. The plot is full on and you will get lost otherwise. I wonder whether this is not one for audio. It might be easier to follow in written form? Unsure.

Entertaining "read"

The narration is very good. It reminds me somewhat of Little Eve by Catriona Ward, but set in Birmingham in the modern day which makes it less of a serious undertaking. A fantasy horror with Brummy accents and humour is what I didn't know I needed! I really enjoyed it

strange, interesting and compelling

The end of this became confusing but over all it was a very interesting listen. Very supernatural and the plot was well developed.
