Summary

It is the sweltering summer of 1997 when strait-laced, straight-A student Karen meets Biba - a bohemian and impossibly glamorous aspiring actress. She is drawn to her new friend’s carefree world of constant parties, and quickly abandons her old life to move into the crumbling Highgate mansion Biba shares with her brother Rex and a stream of lodgers. For a while, life is one long summer of love. But summer must end. And by the end of theirs, two people would be dead.

A great debut!

I would highly recommend this debut novel from Erin Kelly. At times there are hints of early Ruth Rendell and I loved the intermingling of past and present. It keeps you gripped and guessing most of the way through. My only criticism is at times some of the characters were a little unbelievable but this is not a huge problem. I am very excited to see Kelly's new novel on Audible and can't wait to listen

Good read but some confusing parts

Ok so overall i enjoyed this book. It had some great twists and the story itself was very interesting. However, at times I don't think there was long enough pauses when there was a flash back paragraph and I found myself confused about whether it was present day or past. Additionally I think the prologue and the epilogue were not matched very well and I had to relisten to the prologue after I finished the book as I was confused about it all.
I didn't like the characters too much and im also not sure why someone as intelligent as Karen didn't find work as soon as she came back to London and found beber in that horrible flat. She could easily have got her life back on track so that confused me.

Clever plot keeps you hooked to the end

This is a great story of a bunch of decadent hedonists for whom life goes horribly wrong. The characters are wonderfully drawn and the overall atmosphere is sinister and tense. I loved the fact it was set in the recent past because I could identify with what younger people were doing at the time. I look forward to more books from this author.

A little too long

I enjoyed this, but it was a little too long and the ending a little too predictable.

Thrilling Plot

Loved this book. Suspenseful until the end and narrated so brilliantly. Would recommend and will be reading all of Erin Kelly's books.

I've found an author I can't get enough of!

I listen to audio books mostly at night to help me get to sleep. I find concentrating on a plot or subject combined with the childhood comfort of being read aloud to, helps me drift off. However...every now and then I come across books that are a bit too good and I strain to keep awake to find out what happens next..such as with Erin Kelly's!
This book and her others are a great mix of likeable or relatable characters, with some gentle daily life stuff mixed with an exciting mystery/crime plot with some twists (some expected some less so!) So pretty perfect for me and I'd highly recommend.
My only quibble with this story is I found the "girl crush" in it a bit sickly at first which nearly put me off. However things develop interestingly enough , and I suppose we've all had a friend or would-be friend we've gotten a bit obsessed with when younger!

Limited cast

The main characters are a small group of stereotypes from arty and frivolous to responsible and academic. It's hard to have any real understanding of them. The outcome is tragic but rung dry of any real feeling. It is difficult to feel sympathy for these characters as they all make really daft decisions.

Good Story

Good story showing the power some people have over others and what it leads them to do. Enjoyed it.
