Summary
Falken Calder dreams of becoming immortal.
But as a mere scullery boy in service of the fabled Ardent Lunar Sect, his chances of rising through the ranks are slim. There is only one way he can take up the title of cultivator - to awaken before he comes of age. Time is already running out.
When a grand tournament for the magicking arts is announced, bringing old foes to Albion’s shores - rumours of betrayal and war send Falken on a journey in the unknown. There he unearths the mysteries of an ancient, long-forgotten sect - whose secrets offer hope - and the chance for Falken to develop powers that none have seen in an age.
But Falken’s newfound powers may not be enough, for nightmare creatures, dark assassins and even the undead stalk the lands of Netherdei.
And this is only the beginning....

caught me by surprise
Surprisingly well written, even though it wasn’t nearly as original. The world building felt very small scale, but this is only the first book in the series, and I suspect the scope will expand in further volumes. The narration by Joe Jamison was as always excellent. This was a 3.5 stars for me. I liked it and then some.

Work in Progress
Being new to both the narrator and the hackshaw but having the usual story of youth turned hero sounded interesting so i requested this copy for reviewing.
Firstly this although well written in it's entirety seemed still a little slow on the audio side before my attention was properly grabbed and held, not sure if it was just the flow or I wanted this to speed up but it did eventually go just over 50% through to a story I could perk my ears up at.
I liked how quite a few aspects of the support characters were used and the bonds they had helped spread the attention along for out MC Falcon.
The narrator was fairly good although I think i imagined some of the females voices slightly differently but again once this picked up I was enlivened to listen more closely.
Overall this is one of these books and series it's perhaps a bit too early to tell on, given the ending however I shall be keeping my eye on the sequel as i want to see where this is going.

A great start to a story and much more left fie development.
Easy and understandable cultivation system.
Characters have great dialogue abs are unique in there own way, but the female cast/roles could use more interactions and scenes though.

Escapism at its finest!
This book was an amazing listen, quickly gripping me till I was listening at every opportunity!
Make sure you have time to get lost in this book!
The story line leaves you intrigued and the depth of the characters combined with the little details the author illustrates with; means you are invested fully on what happens to each of them as the story unravels.
I already cannot wait for the sequel to find out what happens next in the journey of the the shadow sect!
A must listen for those that love Christopher Paolini, Trudi Canavan and Cassandra Clare.

okay west-fantasy bad wuxia, opportunities missed
Started off quite strong, interesting progression in character development, the MC shows determination to become a cultivator while being a bottom barrell worker whilst being bullied by a 2-dimensional nobles son.
The journey into the world was interesting, nothing new, but done where I wanted to know what happened.
Later on the pacing gets a bit weird which had me losing interest to the point that I didn't care in the end. The classic tournament arc is abruptly interrupted with none of the fanfare, progression, or battles that I looked forward to in a tournament. Big disappointment.
By the end the story becomes a sudden scooby and the gang mish mash, where everything was set at x3 speed. I feel like the author was just trying to squeeze in a close for the arc.
The world is more western fantasy inspired than wuxia, taking inspiration from the cultivation and some plot clichés of wuxia. But that is only a half of what I want from a good wuxia, its biggest disappointment to me is the battles and intricate fighting styles and tactics used, only giving general descriptions of fights with "crane style" or "leopard style". Wuxia is about the great fights, what is the point of naming a fighting style without describing what it meant or what happened?
Still in the end do I not know what style, form or types of strikes his first 'learned' style is.
The VA got me through the book with his interesting medieval feel of characters with some other accents added from people from other sects. but in general, everyone is olden English.
Cultivation had the same problem as the pacing issue, slowly built up a character to struggle and persevere to reach basically level 1 (woo noice) and then have him suddenly hit level 2 on someone else's whim. No work? no enlightenment? not even lessons learnt? cmon.
Overall, I was quite disappointed in how it went, I was interested in how the author would meld the two genres together, wasn't so much as melding as segmented with Western fantasy being more prominent with some wuxia in there but the wuxia bring greatly underappreciated. The quality of battles being the biggest loss, and pacing.

Great performance from the narrator. I read The Shadow Sect shortly after it came out, so was keen to check out the Audible version when I could.

wordy and un-inspired narration
maybe I'm just spoiled by the likes of Podehl, Daniels or Adams to name a few, I was very much looking forward to this book based on summary at pre-order. I gave it a fair shake at 4 hours (at 1.3x any slower and I wouldn't have lasted as long) I agree with some of the reviews that is was very wordy and I probably would've been ok with it, were it with a different narrator. the story had merit. when I think cultivation my mind goes to eastern culture, so it is difficult for me listen to someone with British accent on this book. no discernible accent would have been better imo.

Starts slow ...but it builds
I'm a BIG Fan of wuxia/xanxia cultivation fantasy, and this is a great interpretation by a western author.
The author took the time to come up with an interesting magic system and the world has multiple kingdoms/empires ...and there''s some kind of world war that happened in recent history, and sets the context for the story
The characters are well developed, and the story flows naturally. All in all, I think it's well written ,,,and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
It's definitely worth the credit, give it a shot!

I think this story has a ton of promise for the first book. The narrator was fine, idk why others are saying it's so bad, seems like they have a problem with the accent mostly, which isn't their fault. Overall it's enjoyable and I'm waiting for the second one.

It had a chance...but failed...
I love cultivation novels. And the aspects of cultivation in this story were good. There was also decent character progression. it was all the rest that I had a problem with. The "slow talking", the overly dramatic speaking every other sentence. It was just too tedious and difficult to listen to. I would not recommend it.

Wow…. Amazing series… cannot wait for the next addition.
Slow at first but very important. I love the cultivation within the later parts of the book, that are made only possibly by the development that seems slow in the beginning… if you enjoy cradle or dragon heart (Kirill) then you will love this….

As One
As another reviewer as said, It's Wordy. Yes very much so, You can take 2/3 of the book away and still not find a plot. You will find a naïve little boy trying way to hard to join this crap tastic group of thugs. You will find Sects being sects, The pieces of trash heaps they are. Sects are self entitled gangs that take and take and take and give nothing in return. They are mainly all for the rich and powerful. They hoard knowledge and think they all should automatically be respected without doing a thing. The author shows us this quite well.
