Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A dashing Regency romance from the legendary Georgette Heyer, founder of the genre.

Captain John Staple's exploits against Napoleon's armies in the Iberian Peninsula have earned him the nickname 'Crazy Jack' amongst his comrades in the Dragoon Guards - but once the Battle of Waterloo brings the curtain down once and for all on the Napoleonic Wars, the boisterous, adventure-loving captain finds life in peacetime intolerably dull.

When the captain finds himself lost in the Pennines, he takes refuge at an unmanned toll-house. It's there that he encounters a woman of extraordinary qualities - and suddenly, his soldiering days pale away next to the adventure, and the romance of a lifetime....

Overall pretty good

The story is a classic Heyer. One of my favourites. Overall the performance is okay, occasional moments where it jars but not the worst I’ve heard, nor the best.

Good story and narration

Another great story from Georgette Heyer. The narrator was excellent and managed to portray all the characters well.

Very enjoyable

Thoroughly enjoyable. Listened whilst decorating and it made a boring task much more palatable. I recommend it.

Read this exciting story

This is an exciting, well constructed yarn by the great Georgette Heyer. One of her very best novels.

Great story, bad narrator

Not a big fan of the narration sadly, especially not of the main character. John is such likeable young man and he sounds a 100 years old. It fit a little bit better towards the end, but maybe just because I got used to it.

Thoroughly enjoyable story well narrated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, the narrator was engaging and the story line most enjoyable. Georgette Heyer at her best.

Excellent story, beautifully performed

A little bit different from the usual Georgette Heyer novels, but nonetheless did not disappoint. A low key hero, a lady who needs help and support and a good ending.... just the job!

Too much slang

Bad narrator - I almost stopped listening in the early chapters. For once, I don't like Ms Heyer 's historical accuracy! The vocabulary got in the way of the story. An interesting take, on the other hand, was the love story being resolved with a wedding. Not many of those in her books.

Excellent reading!

Fabulous story, very well read by Callum Hughes. I know the earlier recorded version really well and unlike other new versions I felt that the narrator might have listened to the original as many of his vocalisation/ accent choices were very similar. However I enjoyed this one very much and would choose it over the other when next I listen to this book.

Great story spoilt by narrator

Another excellent Georgette Heyer spoilt by inappropriate narration. The best Regency author ever deserves better than this.
