Summary
Hunted by a shadowy foe in Bloody Mary’s court, Brendan Prescott plunges into London’s treacherous underworld to unravel a dark conspiracy that could make Elizabeth queen - or send her to her death.
England, 1553. Harsh winter encroaches upon the realm. Mary Tudor has become queen to popular acclaim, and her enemies are imprisoned in the Tower. But when she’s betrothed to Philip, Catholic prince of Spain, putting her Protestant subjects in peril, rumors of a plot to depose her swirl around the one person many consider to be England’s heir and only hope: the queen’s half-sister, Princess Elizabeth.
Haunted by his past, Brendan Prescott lives far from the intrigues of court. But his time of refuge comes to an end when his foe and mentor, the spymaster Cecil, brings him disquieting news that sends him on a dangerous mission. Elizabeth is held captive at court, the target of the Spanish ambassador, who seeks her demise. Obliged to return to the palace where he almost lost his life, Brendan finds himself working as a double agent for Queen Mary herself, who orders Brendan to secure proof that will be his cherished Elizabeth’s undoing.
Plunged into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a mysterious opponent who hides a terrifying secret, Brendan races against time to retrieve a cache of the princess’ private letters, even as he begins to realize that in this dark world of betrayal and deceit, where power is supreme and sister can turn against sister, nothing - and no one - is what it seems.

Enjoyable but…
At the end of chapter 6, Queen Mary calls Brendan “Master Prescott” when she only knew him as Beacham (could be Beauchamps, I’ve not seen it written only on audiobook). This bugged me for the rest of the book!! Petty I know, but how on earth did that get past the editor? I did wonder if Steve West was really English because his pronunciation of some words was really weird, especially Yeoman, but other than that, this is such an enjoyable trilogy. I love this period in history and the angle from which this is told is full of intrigue and twists. Looking forward to book 3! Great value that all 3 are included in my membership.

One or two glitches but overall a good listen
The premise is a solid one which could have been possible. The lead character is prone to anger a little more often than might be expected - although he is only supposed to be late teens/early 20s. I did find it hard to believe that he tended to lose fights with smaller and/or explicitly weakened adversaries though.
The narrator was generally good and I appreciated the effort to use a native British English speaker. He rarely intruded into the telling (despite an atrocious ‘Scottish’ accent), although there were a few glaring Americanisms that stuck out and were unwelcome for breaking natural flow.

The book came up in Audible's Plus Catalogue so I thought "why not, I like historical fiction". What a superb treat from start to finish. A light yet entertaining story, superbly well read with a wealth of accents and moods which had be researching bother the author and narrator before the end of the book. 10/10

Not for me.
Poorly written, woefully predictable and too American. Both "The Tudor Secret" and "The Tudor Conspiracy" feel like American TV shows about the Tudors rather than good historical fiction. I don't like giving up on a series after just one book, even if I didn't particularly enjoy it, so I gave book 2 a chance. But C. W. Gortner's books are just not for me.

I didn't really like this one. a lot of what I liked about the main character in the first one, was gone in this addition. also my favorite character was killed off, AND IT DID NOTHING FOR THE STORY! I will say that this book had a lot of twists to it. I did like the ending though.

A Royal Secret
I enjoyed this story. It was 'included' with my Audible membership. Book 2 in the series is also available for download. Two things. When I get this much enjoyment from a story or two, I will use a credit for the next one. Although reviews are great a purchase is the goal. Second: Tudor England has been written about many times, and the history and historic figures are well known. I passed this great story by several times thinking I had nothing left to learn. With that said, I was intrigued by this great fiction and narration.
