Summary

A woman vanishes in the fog up on "the Hill", an area locally known for its tranquillity and peace. The police are not alarmed; people usually disappear for their own reasons. But when a young girl, an old man, and even a dog disappear, no one can deny that something untoward is happening in this quiet cathedral town. Young policewoman Freya Graffham is assigned to the case; she's new to the job, compassionate, inquisitive, dedicated, and needs to know, perhaps, too much. She and the enigmatic detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler have the task of unravelling the mystery behind this gruesome sequence of events. From the passages revealing the killer's mind to the final heart-stopping twist, The Various Haunts of Men is an astounding and masterly crime debut and is the first in what promises to be a magnificent series featuring Simon Serrailler.

You should listen to Susan Hill's brilliant Simon Serrailler trilogy in the correct order which is as follows:

  • Book 1: The Various Haunts of Men
  • Book 2: The Pure in Heart
  • Book 3: The Risk of Darkness

Good stuff!

Who was your favorite character and why?

DC Nathan, flawed, sweet and believable.

Any additional comments?

This is a well written and unusual piece of crime fiction. The characters are well drawn and it is pacey. I only have two minor gripes. Firstly, for a DS, Freya seems unable to employ any physical defense of herself. Given the training in the British Police Force, that isn't very believable. Secondly, although this narrator is very good in respect of pace, voice etc, he makes most of the characters sound like they have sprung from BBC received English of the 1960s, and I find that rather distracting. Nevertheless, the quality of the writing and the clever story will see me purchasing the next book in the series.

Brilliant storytelling, superb writing!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A terrific read, great characters and storyline. You become drawn into the twists and turns of the plot as if you are on a rollercoaster ride, it is hard to stop listening to Steven Pacey's strong narration and by the end you feel emotionally drained.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were well drawn and totally believable as were the places.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I must admit to shedding a few tears at the end!

Any additional comments?

Brilliant book, one of the very best I have listened to and I can't wait to listen to more from Susan Hill.

Gripping

Excellent author, very sympathetic characters and extremely good reading by Steven Pacey. I will be going straight on to the next book in the series.

Well written but disappointing in some respects

The premise of the book was excellent. However I found the female lead character very irritating, and the storyline of her settling into her new life a detraction from the overall story.
I enjoyed listening to it as the narrator was very good.

Unexceptional detective story

Narration was good - Steven Pacey managed most of the female voices fine.

The story was pretty far fetched, and the main characters generally one-dimensional.

The funeral scene at the end especially jarred with me. How come not a single family member or long-term friend of the deceased attended?

Loved the story, full of interesting characters

My first Susan Hill book and it won't be the last. I couldn't put this one down. Full of interesting characters and a good insight into complementary medicine and its effect on vulnerable people. But in the main it was a story of a police investigation that held my interest from start to finish. Excellent narration too.

A bit gutted by the ending

Not a traditional conclusion... was gutted by it. I loved the main character and was looking forward to following her fir a good few decades worth of books about her life as a detective . It wasn’t part of the plan the ending ... not at all. I will try the next book in the series and try to keep an open mind

Good but not riveting.

I enjoyed this. Although it was a bit depressing and I wished that quite so many nice people hadn’t died.
It was well narrated though it sounded dated in parts despite being written only 20 years ago. Young women using the kind of language and expressions that are familiar to me from my 85 year old mother and her friends.
I found the sensible doctor and her extended sensible, professional oh so accomplished, family very smug and irritating. I think we were supposed to admire them. I couldn’t stand them. Nonetheless you do get a lot of people like that in small cathedral cities.
I will try the next one in the series but I will have a break first.

Excellent in all ways

Gripping story, good plot , good characterisation and well read. Interesting delve into complementary medicine alongside more orthodox treatment. t I am glad there is a serious so characters are not wasted. On to number 2.

Loved the reading, very well done

Great twist near the end
