About this listen

We never snacked like this and we never binged like this. We never had so many superfoods, or so many chips. We were never quite so confused about food, and what it actually is.

This is a book about the good, the terrible and the avocado toast. A riveting exploration of the hidden forces behind what we eat, The Way We Eat Now explains how modern food, in all its complexity, has transformed our lives and our world. To re-establish eating as something that gives us both joy and health, we need to find out where we are right now, how we got here and what it is that we share.

Award-winning food writer Bee Wilson explores everything from meal replacements such as Huel, the disappearing lunch hour, the rise of veganism, the lack of time to cook and prepare food and the rapid increase in food delivery services. And Bee provides her own doable strategies for how we might navigate the many options available to us to have a balanced, happier relationship with the food we eat.

Thought provoking and helpful

An illuminating look at why most of us are overweight and how it has become a global problem. The author is particularly good at dismantling the argument for fat shaming individuals and instead makes a compelling case for government intervention. I thought some of the case studies and ideas about how to make change were a bit light and sometimes her own experience and thoughts came through a bit too much for me but overall I found this book thought provoking and helpful. It’s certainly made me rethink what and how I eat

Fabulous book essential for anybody even slightly interested in food

This is a remarkably comprehensive and broad, reaching book about good and bad aspects of how we eat in the modern day. B Wilson does a great job, looking at food from a historical, nutritious and economic perspective. Essential reading for Cookes, eaters, chefs, anyone who eats food!

Facinating

Truly illuminating voyage through our collective experience of food. This book gave me clarity about the eating environment I've always found so hard to navigate.

Level headed and pragmatic

Lots of useful observations without pushing the reader into a particular agenda, a balance that's so rarely struck amongst books in this genre.

We're so often confronted by narrow regimes that are awkward and unenjoyable, or patterns of eating that emphasise one strategy at the expense of another. However, it's increasingly apparent that the best advice appears to be the broadly sensible delivered with a light touch. This is that.

"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants", says Michael Pollan. If the simplicity of that good advice resonated with you then you'll enjoy this book very much.

Fascinating

The dramatic changes in food production and consumption are revealed in all their jaw-dropping scale and speed. Mostly with devastating effect on people and nature. But this book points to hope and how the next phase of our and the world’s diets can be the best yet for us and the planet.
