About this listen

Narrated by acclaimed British actor Edward Petherbridge. On the eve of war, Sherlock Holmes is asked by the Prime Minister of England to recover a new British superweapon that has fallen into the wrong hands. But Lucy James, an actress and Holmes's recently discovered grown daughter, has inherited the family sleuthing skills and strong-willed nature. Despite her father's objections, she insists on helping him, although several horrific murders have been linked to the weapon's disappearance. With Dr. Watson, Holmes and Lucy follow the trail to Germany, uncovering a sinister plot that puts them directly in the line of fire. Featuring appearances from real-life notables Nikola Tesla, King Edward VII, and Kaiser Wilhelm II, this electrifying new mystery puts the greatest deductive mind of his era into a race to save the Empire.©2016 Charles Veley (P)2016 Charles Veley Crime Thrillers Detective Fiction Historical International Mystery & Crime Mystery Private Investigators Thriller Thriller & Suspense Traditional Detectives Women Sleuths Women's Fiction Sherlock Holmes Celebrity War

Excellent Sherlock HolmescNovel

It took me a little bit to get used to the narrator, but after a while I was used to him and really enjoyed this novel. I liked how they incorporated Tesla, king Edward & kaiser wilhelm with Einstein thrown in. I enjoyed this novel. Very much

Enjoyable period mystery

I enjoyed this listen, it is an interesting story about an electrical super-weapon which both England and Germany want prior to WW1. I like that certain famous people from the time are incorporated into the tale.
The story itself is quite enjoyable and exciting in places and cleverly weaves genuine people and places into the fiction. Sherlock and Lucy once again work well together and of course there is Watson aiding them.
The narration is very good indeed, I like listening to Edward Petherbridge's voice, it is ideally suited to tales set in this period.
The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because of the issue that I have had with all the books in this series, the use of Americanisms, especially 'blocks' to describe distance, Sherlock Holmes would never describe something as being a number of blocks away.

Americanese 2.0

Again somewhat spoilt by American failings in English. The most noticeable being the repeated use of the term "Your Majesty" and others reserved for the reigning monarch used to address the Prince of Wales, who should have been addressed as "Your Royal Highness" until he became King Edward VII.
