Summary
This was meant to be the perfect trip. The northern lights. A press launch on a luxury cruise ship. A chance for travel journalist Lo Blackwood to recover from a traumatic break-in that has left her on the verge of collapse and to work out what she wants from her relationship.
Except things don't go as planned. Woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body thrown overboard from the next-door cabin. But the records show that no one ever checked in to that cabin, and no passengers are missing from the boat.
Exhausted, emotional and increasingly desperate, Lo has to face the fact that her sleep problems might be driving her mad, or she is trapped on a boat with a murderer - and she is the sole witness....

Don't bother
I had pretty high hopes for this book, audible seem to be pushing it quite a lot but I found it very frustrating. The main character is so pathetic I ended up willing her not to get out of trouble! If I heard the sentence "I was soooo tired" one more time I though I might scream.
I did get to the end, pulled through by the great performance of the narrator, but it was not a brilliant listen at all.

Just. Too. Melodramatic!!
I've never read Ruth Ware before, I didn't know what to expect, but this novel was just too melodramatic for my taste, like a 21st century Barbara Cartland!
Perhaps I'm over reacting to the character's reaction to being burgled, but it puts the story on an uncomfortable edge which borders on irritating and over the top imaginings! So I'm probably just intolerant of the whole thing or just unsympathetic. Either way, I found it very difficult to continue to care about what happens to her. So, I gave up the struggle.
Listen to the sample - the entire book seems to be like that, before you even arrive at the story! Not my cup of tea!

found the lead character infuriating
This plot had the potential for so much more development with other characters and I found myself just getting annoyed with the lead character and almost giving up with the book on several occasions. the last quarter of the book is probably the best bit

Not As Good As I Wanted It To Be
A great idea, ordinarily executed. If you were pitching this to a Hollywood executive, you would say "Death On The Nile crossed with The Girl On The Train". Which sounds amazing. But then I solved the whodunnit part as soon as we met the characters for the first time. And the big reveal happens a long way from the end and we have a couple of hours of thriller to go. The heroine is not someone I would want to spend too much time with, and the number of times she has to wait "for a minute" to realise something just strikes me as lazy writing.
Imogen Church does well though. Good clear voice, great character voices. She injects as much drama as she can into it. And it was her that pulled me through to the end. I might have given up earlier if the performance wasn't as satisfying.

Brilliant!!!
Loved this! I struggle to find decent Audio Books and always end up returning them as they just get boring! Not this one, great story, kept me hooked until the end, it was tense and nail biting, just what I love. Imogen Church is a brilliant narrator.

In the end ok but 1st half a drag
In the end the book was ok but especially the first half of the book was nearly boring. The main character's neurotic behaviour was irritating and made the book boring. If this had been paper copy not audiobook I would have skipped the middle part and just read the last 20 pages.

Another good listen from this author that I couldn't switch off.
This is the second book from Ruth Ware that I have listened to and again, I was surprised at how the slightly broken heroine somehow didn't annoy me and instead I found myself relating to her. I think this is partly due to good writing but also helped by an excellent narrator whose voice manages to relay the internal conflict of the lead character without making her sound whiny and annoying. While it isn't difficult to see where the plot is going from a reasonable way out, the author manages to keep you interested right to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Really enjoyable!
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this. I found it hard to put down as I always wanted to know what happened next. It is an unusual thriller (which is a great plus in itself) that romps along with some surprising twists. I loved the final few chapters and the ending was very satisfying.

brilliant!
found it hard going at first, but as it got going, it became reminiscent of a classic Agatha Christie mystery in a beautiful, modern day setting. The ending left me with a genuine, if not guilty, smile. thoroughly enjoyed it.

Claustrophobic thriller
I enjoyed this book far more than other recent reviewers. I thought the sense of place on the boat - cramped, disorientating, sinister - was excellent and I liked Imogen Church's narration a lot. Perhaps a bit rushed at the end, though that seems a common fault.
