Summary

What she can't see can hurt her

I have this dream.

In it, I'm in the house, and it's dark, and I know someone's in there with me.

Even though I can't see them....

For Sarah and Patrick, family life has always been easy. But when Sarah's mother dies, it sends Sarah into a downwards spiral. Knowing they need a fresh start, Patrick moves the family to the beachside house he grew up in.

But there is a catch: while their new home carries only happy memories for Patrick, to everyone else it's known as the Murder House - named for the family that was killed there.

Patrick is adamant they can make it perfect again, though with their children plagued by nightmares and a constant sense they're being watched, Sarah's not so sure.

Because the longer they live in their 'dream home', the more different her loving husband becomes....

A chilling psychological thriller about dark family dysfunction and the secrets that haunt us, The Woman in the Dark will captivate fans of B A Paris, Clare Mackintosh and Stephen King's The Shining.

Really enjoyed

This book was so good. I really enjoyed it, it kept me interested a proper page turner. In my opinion not all the characters were likeable and some got what they deserved. Please give it ago, the narrator was very good 😃😃😃

Chilling throughout

I found this story extremely gripping and beautifully narrated throughout, although I did find the audio slightly distorted.
You won’t be disappointed, a great mix of crime and a touch of the supernatural (or is it), read it and find out.

Superior Thriller

This was a really good book. It was very tense from start to finish and a good depiction of a slow descent into insanity and the unraveling of a family. The description of the house was very creepy and as a listener, it came to life and the impact it had on the family. The narration was good with just the right amount of fear projected through Siriol Jenkins voice for the main character. I sort of guessed the twist but it did not spoil it for me. A good listen.

Tense, sad and disturbing

It took me a while to finally getting down to reading this, but once I did, I was not disappointed. The tension grabs you from the very first page. In the summary, it says this will appeal to fans of “the shining” by Stephen King, and having read both, I can see why. A man slowly driven out of control by the location he’s in. The line “take your medicine,” is also used in this book, all be it, Patrick means it literally, where as Jack Torrance meant it in a punishment sense. I guessed a few of the twists before they happened, but the “woman in the dark” came through in the end, helping Sarah out of danger. I disliked Patrick from page 1, even before they moved. Jack from the shining, same. There are a lot of similarities between the 2 in my opinion. Although, whereas Patrick was pure evil, I think Torrance was just miss guided, and had habits he could not break. If you’ve read this but not “the shining,” I recommend you do. A really good book, it tackles sensitive subjects IE self harm, child abuse, but does so in a way which makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I have to say, my sympathy for Patrick didn’t change all through the book, I believe people are who they want to be with help, not by past issues. Really well narrated too, it’s not a book with any humour in it, it’s tense and disturbing throughout. There were times I wanted to shake Sarah, too. Only ones I really felt for all the way through, were Joe and Mia. Some very sad parts, too.

I hardly ever review but this was so bad...

Before I start I must say the narrator was alright. Little bit panto villain but otherwise bearable. But the story. Oh God it is so terrible. Basically hardly anything happens so the story just keeps repeating the same trite thriller motifs. Sometimes not even changing the details. Like the shell that gets left on the door step...then later a box with a shell and feather is left...and it is hardly significant. And the heroine must have woken up in the night to find her husband doing something ominous like 12 times. In fact, main character is so pathetic its hard to care about what is happening to her. No one in the story is remotely interesting. Patrick is almost comically villanous and is such a cliche its unbearable. Don't waste a credit.

On and on and on...

I still have three hours to go and I’m on the point of returning this book. The main woman (whose name I can’t even remember) is dreadful, she seriously needs to pull herself together. She keeps saying “I want to ask...” and I want to scream back “well why don’t you then?” And she treats her 15 and 17 year old children as if they’re toddlers. It’s no wonder her daughter hates her most of the time. It might work as a film, with a gradual building of the situation but on and on the book goes. The narrator did her best and I’ve probably been too harsh with her star rating, but it’s the growly menacing voice that’s so annoying. I really wouldn’t bother.
