Summary

When Charlie Flint is sent a mysterious package of cuttings about a brutal murder, it instantly grabs her attention. The murder occurred in the grounds of her old Oxford college - a groom battered to death just hours after his wedding. As his bride and wedding guests sipped champagne, his alleged killers were slipping his bloodstained body into the river.

Charlie doesn't know who sent the package, or why, yet she can't get the crime out of her head. But as she delves deeper, and steps back into the mysterious world of Oxford colleges, she realises that there is much more to this crime than meets the eye.

Better than the my couple VM listened

I used to be a huge Val McDermid fan but then her books started to lack the erudition, twists and turns of her earlier work. Then the books seemed to descend into a lesbian crusade. Trouble with that was that the books became predictable as any gay character couldn’t be the ‘baddie’. This book deals with VM’s gender and gay equality priorities but she has returned to building these into a well constructed story.

Read it and make your own mind up

Enough of your homophobic crap. This is a good work of fiction. The fact that the main characters are lesbian isn’t important. The writing and plot construction is first class. Get a grip!

Really good

I can’t believe some of the bad reviews had been written about this book ??? It was brilliantly narrated, the story was clever and full of side story but all in such a way you didn’t ever get lost. Money well spent.

An Outstanding Thriller

I am so sorry I finished this story. I tried to make it last but I had to keep listening. Exceptionally well narrated, this story was very involved and beautifully structured. It kept me guessing right to the end - a perfect thriller.

Ethically Interesting

Well read, and presented, what made this audio crime novel interesting to me was the first consistent use of the 'Ethic of Care' which arose in Moral Philosophy research in the 1980s, in response to the idea of "Ethic of Justice' being the moral framework for the whole of humanity. Since the 'Ethic of Care' was taken as being the main female way of reasoning about the moral, or ethical, quality of behaviour this becomes a very interesting account indeed. I am not sure whether I would have realised this if I had read the book, rather than listening to it, whilst doing other things. Pacing is patchy, the story in the round, very interesting (and yes, you MUST be a medic to be a psychiatrist; very few people can start a medical degree with a Psychology degree, even a first from Oxford; although you might do psychology for your final, pre-clincal year, as medics did at UCL in the 80s when I were a lass) and there are forensic psychiatrists. Recommend

intricate

The story takes its time to get going, and sometimes focuses on the gay aspects to the detriment of the whole. Once up to speed the tale is intricate and we'll constructed.

Different

This was a decent enough yarn; yet, falling short of what you would describe as a gripping read. It was unusual in the fact that all of the main characters are lesbians. This is fine & I had no issues with that. It was just the ?old girl? network; that I felt made the plot a tad twee. Nonetheless, I am sure that the lesbian community would welcome some main stream literature, where lesbians vastly outnumber the heterosexuals for a change. Overall, I would recommend to other readers.

Well done Val you've done it again!

Would you consider the audio edition of Trick of the Dark to be better than the print version?

I don't know if it's better to hear it rather than read it to ones self. For me though to hear it saves me time and means i can cover more books generally. The reading of this book was very good indeed and i enjoyed it immensely.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Trick of the Dark?

There was too many memorable parts in this cleverly composed book to pick one out.

Have you listened to any of Juanita McMahon and Gerri Halligar ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Never, but i will look forward to hearing their reading again.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me want to hear every word so i was emotionally involved al the way through the story.I was very pleased that Charlie saw sense in the end and even more pleased that Maria was so forgiving and caring. Nice to read a strong lesbian story with strong characters.

Any additional comments?

This is one of Val's most clever stories.Beautifully written and thrilling all the way from beginning to end. Can't wait to read Val's next one.

Well paced, well narrated

A well paced, well structured book which was supported by a good narration.
A few unexpected twists and good characterisation made this one a real pleasure to listen to.
