About this listen
Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself.
When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. As with his other gigs, he sets rules for himself: no leaving the house for any reason, refrain from outside contact, and sleep during the day.
When Thomas Ruth, Felix's oldest friend and fellow horror film obsessive, joins him on the project, the two dance around a recent and unspeakably painful rough patch in their friendship, but eventually fall into their old rhythms of dark humor and movie trivia. That's when things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement. Felix realizes the book he's writing, and his very state of mind, is tilting from nonfiction into all-out horror, and the shocking climax answers a question that's been staring these men in the face all along: In Rotter House, who's haunting who?

Creepy slow burn Gothic horror
The premise is strong, the characterisation of two best friends sticking it out in a maybe haunted house is good, and there's a hell of a twist that puts a new spin on a few things earlier in the story. Highly recommended and very enjoyable.

slow build to a very strong finish
The story starts quite slow paced, and with a lot of background and scene building that is absolutely crucial as you reach the ending that you don't expect or even see coming! Definitely worth reading, and enjoyable to listen to, as the narrator does a really good job in bringing the story to life.

A very good ghost story and brilliantly narrated!
Brilliant narration of a good old fashioned ghost story! I throughly enjoyed it and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good ghost story.

I wasn't expecting the ending! wow!
I love horror and thriller stories, my favourites are haunted house stories. This one is a bit different from the usual haunted house tales. It's not about the generic unsuspecting family moving into a house and slowly coming to realise that its haunted. This is about a failing writer, a sceptic, staying for the best part of 2 weeks in a derelict mansion, with the aim of writing a book on ghosts. His best friend, a fervent believer in the supernatural, comes along and they both have experiences in the house that can't be explained. I wasn't expecting the ending and I won't spoil it for readers, except to say that I hope someone makes this into a film one day. 5 stars from me!

Not just another haunted house cliche
I loved this listened to the whole story in one go! Kept me hooked. I’ve read a lot of horror in my 50 years and it managed to present a new slant on an old fave for me.
The reading was great too!
