About this listen
"What did he eat last? Whom did he eat, in fact?"
Lumbered with working alongside reptilian Chief Spy Anacrites, Falco has the perfect plan to make money - he will assist Vespasian in the Emperor's 'Great Census' of AD 73. His potential fee could finally allow him to join the middle ranks and be worthy of long-suffering Helena Justina.
Unexpectedly confronted with the murder of a man-eating lion, Falco is distracted from his original task, uncovering a bitter rivalry between the gladiators' trainers. With one star gladiator dead, Falco is forced to investigate and the trail leads from Rome to the blood-soaked sand of the arena in North Africa.

Not the usual standard
There seemed to be a large section in the middle that was given over to background or scene setting. It just didn't move along at the usual pace. The start and finish were crisp but it got bogged down in the middle.

Two for the Lions
I really enjoyed the story . The characters are wonderful . However has a beautiful voice for reading but I felt he lacked the emotion that brought the characters to life .

Another great Ripping Yarn
Lindsay Davis never fails to deliver. Two for the Lions has more twists and turns than a Roman catacomb right to the end she leaves uou guessing

Lions 0 Falco 2
I have become used to Gordon Griffin as the narrator of some of the Falco audiobooks now although Christian Rodska was a hard act to follow. If you imagine Falco in his retirement telling tall tales of his days as an Imperial Roman investigator then it's very enjoyable. Lindsey Davis's writing is always entertaining not to be missed!

Varying Action, Intriguing Ending
This marks the half-way mark in the Falco novels and I enjoyed this 10th adventure mystery. I have to admit too that I have now can easily accept the narrator/performer. This listen/read was best for me in the scenes where action is part of the narrative and when characters are involved in dialogue together. Helena Justina has a presence that shines - I wonder whether she will become more significant within investigations in the remaining novels? When the Falco adventures include something of a road-trip I do not glaze at the descriptions of place, but do not take the time to break off and Google as image that might help 'fix' it for me. This is a minor niggle; I have the ten remaining audio-books and books ready and waiting for their turn in the queue. Here the presence of one recurring character intrigues and the novel's ending certainly raises expectations as to whether there is to be a development or even a conclusion. I remain a fan of the author's totally readable style and a narrative that slips along with ease. For me these are comfort books that engage and satisfy. Once this series ends for me, I will taste the subsequent series and discover whether I have another listening/reading journey to follow.

"I have a few questions to ask."
Rome, AD.73-4, and needing money for restoration after Nero's chaos, Vespasian called for a census. And Falco was hired to investigate the authenticity of estimations given by the citizens of their wealth and looked set to derive a nice little profit for himself and partner. But then an old lion, used in executions of criminals, was found dead, speared in his cage ...
Lindsey Davis's 'Falco is always great fun, especially for readers enjoying detective stories set in Roman times. As well as being intriguing mysteries, with great characters, both colourful and human, they also paint gloriously colourful pictures of life nearly 2,000 years ago. Great fun.
This is my second reading of all of the Falco novels, the first time in print form a decade or more ago, this time in audio, and I am very much enjoying them again except, with this story, the considerable multitude of names occurring in the latter half kept me a little confused at times. But, also, although the narration by Gordon Griffin is undoubtedly good, for me he is simply the wrong person - not my idea of Falco at all. I confess I have been spoilt by the perfect performances of Anton Lesser, the Falco in the BBC productions of Davis' books-1-5 and Griffin gives a different impression Sadly, Lesser only reads the abridged Falco novels.
