About this listen

The fourth novel in the Lindsay Gordon series.

Leaving her new home in California for a trade union conference in Sheffield, Lindsay Gordon finds herself in the company of old friends – and enemies, including Tom Jack. When this unethical union leader is found dead, having catapulted out of Lindsay’s tenth-floor hotel room, she is taken in for questioning by the police. Hoping to clear her name by finding the real killer, Lindsay searches among hundreds of unruly union delegates for a murderer who may have struck once before. Along the way she uncovers a seething cauldron of blackmail, corruption and abuse of power, all brought to the boil by her investigation.

Dreadful narration

The attempt at different accents is appalling- unconvincing (eg a Yorkshire accent somewhere between American and alien), inconsistent (so you don’t know which character is speaking). Ghastly!

Readers accent to broad

Whilst I accept that Val McDermid is Scots and presenting the book with a Scottish person reading gives emphasis to the book, lately the person reading the book has an accent that is quite broad and makes for difficult listening for those of us not fully accustomed to the accent.
This appears to be a trend with other books written by authors from Scotland and publishers should think about this if they wish to make their superb writers available to all.

another great read / listen

great story. really like the way the characters have developed over the series so far. the interaction between Lindsey and Sophie is fabulous. really feels like a relationship. made me chuckle at times. enjoyed the backdrop to the story, travelling back in time.

Dreadful Narration

I couldn’t listen to the end because of the awful narration. Accents all over the place and they proved distracting, it might have been a good story but I couldn’t listen to the dreadful accents which proved distracting.

Very well written, somewhat dated

McDermid guarantees a well-written book, brilliant sentences and a great sense of humour. However, I felt this book was a little too dated for me. Peace protest camps were too prominently present for my liking. To me that was slightly jarring

Ruined by the narration - sorry!

I’m sorry to say that the delivery of the story rather ruined it for me. The attempts at the different accents were painful and I cringed through those scenes.
The story isnt my favourite of Val’s but that’s just my personal preference and no reflection of the story, which was well written.

Another Lindsay Gordon Thriller

The start of this heavy going with all the conference detail! Worth persevering though.

the narrator

I am not able to complete even the first chapter of this book and if possible would like to change it. the narator' voice is extremely irritating. impossible to continue listening.
