Summary

Deep in the Dark Ages, with Vikings to the north and Aghlabid pirates to the south, a small flicker of the Roman Empire has been nurtured as an island of high civilization. Defeated Longobards scheme to bring it down from within.

If Byzantium falls 600 years too soon, nothing of Western civilization will survive to spark the Renaissance. Enter Wade Linwood of the 21st century. Suffering of crossed senses where scents can conjure objects and sights can call up tastes, he wants nothing but the ordinary life of an insurance underwriter.

When a trip to the acupuncturist opens an unused portal in his synesthete's brain, a plea from the past draws him to a time when he must save the remaining shreds of history to preserve his own.

"Many would be lucky to write a whole series marked by the wit and gift for swashbuckling action and romance that Parris builds into his debut.... A sharply intelligent and energetic historical fantasy." (Kirkus Reviews)

Average story with an awesome narrator

The story starts off a little goofy but it does get better as it progresses. Wade doesn't really get much chance to do anything though as he's usually a prisoner, so he kind of just ambles through the story with stuff happening to/around him. It does very much feel like this is the first book in a series. I will check out the sequel when it becomes available.
The narrator's performance is amazing. Love his voice and totally kept me listening through the parts in which I felt the quality dipped a little.

Excellent

A really good listen. The main character having synesthesia was very original and made the book feel unique. Good humour, a solid plot, and the voice actor's performance was strong.

The voice actor saved it. amazing listen. I came

You MUST listen to this book. Somehow couldn't get ahead around reading it, but the silky smooth voice of this narrator Nathan Chatelier was a saving grace. I think he has converted me to audio books because whilst the plot was only slightly above average, the voice over took this to 5 stars. could not recommend enough.

Fun and bizarre

Pretty much as it says above. The performance really captured the mood. Fantasy, thrill, quirkiness.
