Summary

Life is an unpredictable white-water ride of fast currents, beautiful scenery, rocky passageways, and calm waters. What Does It Matter? is a simple yet profound framework to be used when deciding priorities, curating possessions, making plans, and managing emotions.

In this life-affirming book, the author shares what she has found undeniably helpful in her own life and offers it to you, the listener, to use in yours—however you want to. And the "however you want to" bit is crucial, because the best lesson you can take away from this book is to remember to think before you follow. Remember to think before you overreact. Remember to think before being so hard on yourself. Remember to ask, "What does it matter?" to help you see the funny side in any situation sooner.

You are in charge of yourself; your life is yours. You can think for yourself—don't let anyone tell you that you can't. Happiness propaganda may imply that you are not enough or your life is sub-standard, but this book will serve as a direct torpedo hit against that commonplace assault. Use this book as part of your protection plan against self-destruction . . . and then use it to help others. Live life with less stress and more joy by asking yourself: "What does it matter?" (WDIM)—and have the courage to act on your answer.

Releasing and empowering: a key to freedom

Wow! This book is one I will treasure for life. I first read it in paper format but had to buy the audio version too to be able to reread more easily and to embed the nuggets of critical thinking and questioning that Emma so carefully and very personally sets out this book. Applying the key question ‘what does it matter?’ allows you to still your mind as you contemplate, with honesty, what really does matter at that point in time. And then, as you, from that place of stillness, work out the answer to that question, you can also manage to work out how to proceed from there. You can then choose not to pick back up the mental or emotional load you were carrying, that you have just decided does not matter and, instead, you can walk into a more stress free, joy filled existence. And you can do this over and over again. If applied, this book and the question it addresses can empower, release and bring you freedom, just as it has me. Thank you Emma for having written this remarkable gem!

Love this book!

I love this book. It’s a must have. As a mum of 2 little ones I am finding this super helpful. It is helping me deal with stress and anxiety throughout the mundane, day to day challenges. I am now able to recognise and pinpoint ‘stress’ in my thinking and feeling which I probably just thought of as ‘normal’ before. I am grateful that someone is out there saying all of this, causing me to reflect and realise: that I don’t NEED to live in constant stress anymore!

I have been listening to the audiobook which is really handy as I can have that on as and when I am able. I got through that quite quickly and there were chapters I kept going back to, - there was even a day I was racing back from work as I was genuinely excited to listen again. Throughout the book I felt inspired, challenged, yet greatly understood.

I have now finished the whole book but I keep going back in and out of it as it is a great and helpful tool! Packed with wisdom, stories you’ll find relevant and strategies to help you not only cope but thrive in life.

Truly will lead to less stress and more joy!

This book has taken me on a journey of prioritisation and helped me let go of things that don’t matter and value the things that do! No confusing jargon or secret hacks, just straight forward logic and honesty lovingly delivered. Lots of beautiful stories and tips a long the way as well as a really well read audiobook!
