Summary

Once, we’d worshipped them as Gods.

For nearly 400 years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame.

Then, we died on their swords.

All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once again. The magic of faerie marks those of us they mean to take, but the Mist Guard protecting Nothrek will kill us all before they let the fae have us. There’s no choice but to flee everything I’ve ever known, not if I want to live to see my twenty-first birthday as a free woman.

Now, they’ll claim what’s theirs.

But before they capture me, Caelum saves me from the Wild Hunt. Fae-marked and on the run, he is able to fight back in ways I only dream of. From tentative alliance to all-consuming passion, our bond strengthens as the fae close in and evil lurks ever nearer. With my life on the line, he is everything I shouldn’t dare to want and a distraction I can’t afford. I can’t seem to stay away, not even with something greater on the line.

My heart.

Boring and lots of red flags

Towards I just couldn’t stand reading anymore, absolutely disgusting and basically rape forcing the MC to do things she isn’t comfortable with.

Predictable and uncomfortable at times.

Im a fan of ACOTR and Blood & Ash series so was delighted when this was in the plus catalogue. However in all honestly, had I used a credit on this i would probably have returned it!
The story starts strong but quickly slows to a snail pace with not a lot happening for more than half the book. The characters are unlikeable, particularly the leading male who is actually rather abusive to the point the sex scenes are uncomfortable to listen to. The twist is so predictable that I started getting frustrated at the main

I can see this being a nice light read. But God that mmc is horrid with his words.

Idea was promising, execution poor

The book has some great ideas at its foundation, and the author clearly did some research into fairy lore. However, the plot was bland and the characters two-dimensional. I really didn’t like the male main character, there was no complexities to his character and no development. Spicy bits were also a bit on-the-nose and I found myself cringing at some of the “spicy” dialogue. The performance also felt a bit wooden, although the narrator didn’t have a lot to play with.

Overall, this book has all the hallmarks of a classic spicy fantasy romance, but none of the substance. It’s not for me.

Ugh, I really wanted to like this book

The story is interesting and the main characters relationship seemed promising at the start, but the controlling, gaslighting and insufferable behaviour from the MMC, dubious consent and creepy condescending pet name for the FMC completely sapped my enjoyment.

I love a steamy book but the MMCs behaviour and cringeworthy demands the FMC refer to him as her god while he manipulated her into carrying out sex acts she only seemed sort of into ruined all the sex scenes for me.

I won’t be continuing with the series.

it's not for you if.. (may contain spoilers)

you don't want to know more than the fmc.
you want strong independent woman.
don't want to feel smarter than the fmc.

okay, i liked the story but after reading the coven this felt like an opposite fmc and where i liked that story of the coven jumped right in, this just keeps building and circling back way to many times.

within 10 minutes of the second storyline (after beginning background building etc). i already knew what was eventually revealed at the very last moments of the book.

i don't like it when the reader is more knowing then the fmc because you don't get blown away by plottwists, you what's coming and it makes me want to scream at the fmc for not seeing what is to obviously.

the fmc keeps relying on the mmc even when she keeps talking about how she doesn't want that.

She is been groomed by a person but sometimes it feels like the mmc is not that different. even when she aknowledges this, she still falls for it..

narriting the fmc or woman was good. but everytime it switched to a male character it felt really robotic.

We don’t like it when men tell us what to do

I enjoyed the first 20% but the the rest of the story was pretty must the same. I also really didn’t like the male lead character he was so possessive and creepy early on and always telling the main lead who said she wanted to be independent what to do and she would just take it (I will spoil it if I carry on)

Surprisingly good after reading other reviews!

Ok so I will start by saying I agree to an extent with the negative reviews of this book that yes Estrella can be perceived as weak and Caellum is overbearing and possessive. It’s not a healthy relationship that’s for sure, but after listening to all three books and seeing the progression of characters I actually grew to love them both. I would say too that book 1 is just the beginning of the series and is so different to the subsequent booos that it’s a shame for those who didn’t stick with it to see how everything changes!
Without spoiling it for anyone the MFC continues to grow and develop throughout the series and their relationship is much more tolerable, roles reverse by the end.
I’d say if you listened to it thinking it was good but weren’t keen on the possessive aspects of the relationship then it’s worth sticking with and listening to more. I’m glad I did and I’m excited for the 4th one.

Interesting read

I wasn’t sure whether I would like this story at the start…it seemed to be a bit confusing, and the MMC is up and down with being lovable and unlikable…the story overall was a good one though, I will be continuing with the series.
