Summary
She thought she had the dream life – and then her nightmares began…
“A proper mind-blowing page-turner,” (Elizabeth Haynes, Into the Darkest Corner)
Eva Curtis is a pathological perfectionist whose attention to detail means she never makes mistakes – until one slip-up leads to the death of a patient and the end of her career.
Depressed and anxious, she experiences terrifying dreams, so visceral they’re almost real.
With the support of two strong men in her life – her doting husband, Jacob, and her enigmatic psychologist, Saeed – she’s determined to get her life back on track.
But then she discovers a secret safe, hidden in Jacob’s study, and her world is turned upside down.
The three items inside make her question everything she held true....
Who is the man she married?
Was her patient's death even her fault?
And are her nightmares the key that unlocks the truth?
When He’s Not Here is a dark and twisty psychological thriller that will keep you guessing right to the end.
Narrated by the star of stage and screen: Emilia Fox

My guilty pleasure. So many twists and turns.
I could not stop listening there were so many twists and turns. Once you get sucked into the world of the main character it’s difficult to think of anything else. I binged the whole novel (14 hours) in two says. I was so desperate to find out the answer to the mystery I switched to double speed. It doesn’t disappoint. No spoilers, but there is a brilliant revelation at the end that I never saw coming. The reader is brilliant too. After hearing the audiobook, I immediately read the book itself. This book has been my guilty pleasure this summer and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Brilliant
I very rarely review a book unless it stands out for me. I thought I had to put fingers to keyboard to thoroughly recommend this brilliant book. It twisted throughout and I’m glad I downloaded it. Emilia Fox was as reliably perfect in her narration as in everything I’ve heard her read. Don’t hesitate it’s an enthralling tale.

Wow! Phenomenal! My mind is officially blown!
Phenomenal audiobook, hooks you from chapter one and never lets go. Hard to believe this is a debut. Outstanding writing, the most gripping thriller I’ve ever listened to with a twist that blew my mind.
Listener beware though: the author really puts you through the wringer. Every moment of pain and suffering is experienced first hand, no cutting, no shying away from grim and terrifying encounters. Some listeners may find that hard going and perhaps it should come with a warning but this is dark psychological thriller, not cosy mystery.
One reviewer said there were repeated sentences in the audio, but I listened for those and there were none, so suspect that was unique to that listener. Nobody else is complaining of that.
Emilia Fox’s narration is fabulous. I wasn’t keen on the American accent but they’re hard to pull off for any narrator and for a posh Brit, it’s a good attempt.
But what made this novel really stand was its sheer cleverness. After hearing the twist, I did a double take… like, WFT?! Wow!!! It seemed so implausible I had to go back to the beginning and listen again knowing the truth. It was the second listen that really blew my mind. It’s so clever, the truth is right in front of your eyes the whole time but you can’t see it. There were no tricks from the author, nothing that didn’t ring true on a second read. How she pulled that off is beyond me.
Carrie Magillen is in a league of her own with a different style to most psychological thrillers out there. Colour me impressed enough to get the rest in the series. Well done Ms Magillen, a stand-out debut.

Thoroughly unbelievable but v enjoyable
This is a very original pyschological thriller that kept my attention throughout and Emilia Fox is a fabulous narrator, as you would expect. The storyline is pretty far-fetched really, telling the tale of one woman's fateful marriage to a man with a split personality syndrome... it gets increasingly more outlandish as the story draws to a close but I have to say I very much enjoyed the ride!
